Quote from LIhikers: “Thanks hikerboy. I ordered directly from ALDHA. I like much better to have the book in hand than use a PDF on a device or gadget. I guess it'll get here when it gets here. ” You should get it in the next week or so.

It depends where you bought the Companion through, from ALDHA directly or through a 3rd party like Amazon. I know ALDHA has already been shipping them. You can also get thr pdf version if you're an active ALDHA member. A membership costs $20.

Took a walk today
PostQuote from IMScotty: “Quote from hikerboy: “Yesterday I hiked in a park I'd never heard of. I'd seen it mentioned in a FB group so I decided to check it out, and I'm glad I did. It's called Trail View State Park. Turns out it's got some fun trails, not too challenging, and a lot of possible loop variations. It does share some of the trails with mountain bikes, but yesterday I was mostly alone, no hikers and one mountain biker. I'll go back again. I couldn't believe I'd never heard of it before. …

Quote from LIhikers: “Quote from odd man out: “Quote from LIhikers: “I'm thinking ahead to our planned LASH of the southern half of the AT in 2024. I'm wondering if alcohol is readily available, south of Harper's Ferry, for stove fuel or would I be better off switching to a canister stove? ” also interested. I've always used alcohol, but not yet hiked long enough to need to refuel enroute. ” We've always used alcohol for all 3 season hikes. We never had problems finding fuel in outfitters, hardw…

Quote from IMScotty: “I am all for a formula to try to quantify a rating, but there are so many variables that have left out. Astro correctly brings up one, Altitude. It makes a huge difference. I will bring up another, mud and roots! Try hiking the Northern half f the Long trail sometime OK Cafe members, what other variables are missing? ” Attitude. Some days you're just going to feel stronger than other days.

The Appalachian Trail is one of the most hiked trails in the world. I was always a solo hiker for many years, and tended to avoid crowds and people in general. One of the benefits of section hiking is the ability to pick your spots at different times of year to avoid the bubble. But unless you're able to hike in the winter, any 500 mile stretch in spring or summer, you'll be bound to be seeing people most days and nights. Embrace it. In 2013 I hiked from Springer to Damascus, starting March 20. …

Quote from Stinkfinger: “What do you mean by, water issues? Since my only time to hike the AT will be in summer, I think I will just have to deal with the heat at some point, whether it's 2024 or 2025. ” In the summer, many sources listed as "intermittent" will dry up all the way up through the mid atlantic. It just means you may be forced to carry a bit more water between reliable sources. It means a bit more weight, but your summer pack is lighter than if you were starting in March or early Apr…

Start at N Adams in Mass and head north to Katahdin. It's unlikely you'll do half the trail in just 2 months, and it will give you some time to get your trail legs before you hit the Whites and Maine. It will also keep you out of some of the heat. In the South it will be hot, muggy and buggy, and you may have some water issues by mid summer.

Hiking plan for 2024
PostOf course, I'm a little biased, but I prefer the Companion. And with a $20 annual ALDHA membership, you can get a free download of the companion, and just print out the sections you need.

Quote from rhjanes: “Quote from StalkingTortoise: “I had time to kill over lunch yesterday and watched a few more 360 Investigations videos. Apparently, ultralight has no relationship with the mass of an item. It's all about volume. And 90% of the people out there who don't understand this have no right to be hiking or camping. Oh, the expected interactions with other hikers on the trail. I'm hoping they get posted on trailjournals.com or on TOS. "I ran into this hiker named Matt_C and got an ea…
