Quote from IMScotty: “Nice, looks like you have a DeKay's Brown Snake in the first photo. ” The last one was in a hurry and disappeared in hole in a big rock. But I would rather he be in a hurry to get away than in a hurry coming at me.

Quote from rhjanes: “I went Orienteering yesterday at a Dallas City park. It was HOT by mid-afternoon. SO I didn't answer yesterday's question until 9 PM when I could hardly keep my chin off my chest. And missed it. There IS a "Bear Mt. Inn" in Maine (which I'd clicked on), BUT the photo was of the one in New Yawk. How was Orienteering? I did OK. But we had one lady not know/ignore the "Hard stop and return by 3 hours" (her time was over 4 hours), six kids way over time and two who NEVER returne…

Still think they have Stratton (MacKaye's idea) in NH mixed up with Sugarloaf in ME Sugarloaf. Now that is near where Avery completed the trail. Since I went with what they had before (even though I think it is wrong) I kept my current streak alive, but still a long way from my 88 straight (71 + 17).

Howza, welcome to the Cafe! I will let the others adress the "light weight stove", since I optimize on convenience with a 11oz Jet Boil Flash Lite. But as for fuel on the AT there are so many outfitters along the way you may be able to get by with 100g cannisters most of the time, or go with 230g which is more economical. No need to go with extra weight and size of 450g.

  • Hoping your feet workout and you do not end with more orphans miles from your partner. If you need new footwear Outdoor 76 downtown is your best bet, although 3 Eagles at US 64 and 441 is the other outfitter option. A few things around Franklin to see are Bridal Falls and Dry Falls on Hwy 28. Also Wallace Branch has a waterfall where the Bartram Trail picks up on the west side of Franklin. Scottish Museum is downtown across street from Outdoor 76 (a few stores down). Also nice little Visitors Ce…

  • Quote from StalkingTortoise: “Sitting in the Franklin Microtel this afternoon. Just soaked my battered feet in Epsom Salts and am hoping to get some day-hiking in through the rest of the week. The remnants of Ian made Saturday and Sunday miserable. The soles of both boots started delaminating and wet socks did a number on my feet. But we made it to our 08:30 Clingmans Dome pickup on time this morning. I dropped Sox off just past noon at Winding Stair Gap for a day-hike to Wayah Bald. Picking him…

Hey, within the 610 Loop on Houston there used to be cattle just to get the lower agriculture property tax rate.

  • I was hoping to make it out that way to meet you somewhere and give you kind of trail magic. But not going to be able to make it now. Still wish you a great and safe trip and hike.
