Quote from hikerboy: “i like to walk” Me too. And I like to walk in some pretty God-forsaken places. A car that can get to said places allows me more time walking in places that I like more, and saves me some walking in places that I like less. (I like to walk even in town, so 'like less' is correct.)

Homesteaded, after the landlord suddenly turned up and chased it out of a squat.

  • Quote from Foresight: “Not so sure on the constitutionality of the federal government owning land (outside of a few acres in DC) in the first place.” Note that the Federal Government owned vast tracts of land even at the time of the ratification of the Constitution. The first of the 13 states to cede its interests in land to the central government did so in 1781. If the Framers had intended to forbid the Federal government from owning the land, why did they continue to have States cede their wes…

Quote from socks: “According to an 1891 patent by New York businessman Seth Wheeler, the end of a toilet paper roll should be on the outside, or in the “over” position. (Advocates of the “under” position, take note: better flip that roll over when you get home.)” Not unless you want the cat to unroll the entire roll trying to climb on it.

    (1) I presume that your phone has a baro altimeter, then? Good. (2) Does it offer control of the integration loop time? I don't want a wonky GPS signal suddenly deciding to reset my baro altimeter. (I use the altimeter in my watch, and set it myself when I'm at a known elevation)

  • I never mind sharing food if I've brought enough. And I'll bring enough if I know you're coming and want to share. (A 7-oz pouch of chicken, for instance, is too much for me, and that's all that the local stores carry.)

  • Quote from SarcasmTheElf: “I've mentioned this here before, but I have actually had bucks square off with me on the trail during mating season. They didn't charge me but i had to step off trail and walk around them, one was less than 15 feet away and wouldn't budge. During the rut, bucks really are the dumb horny frat boys of the forest. ” You got that right. My wife had a buck dent the passenger door of her car once. He saw his reflection in the side windows, lowered his head and charged it.

  • Liner (trash compactor bag) to keep gear dry. Pack cover because I think that if I get my pack soaking wet, the water weighs more than the cover. (And I know that without my pack cover in winter, I can accumulate an astonishing load of ice on the pack.)

  • Quote from Astro: “I personally think Myron Avery deserves a lot more credit than Benton MacKaye. MacKaye had an idea, but Avery did all of the work and made it a reality! As Thomas Edison said "Vision without Execution is just an Hallucination".” And a whole lot of others. The first section of actual new trail (for much of its route, the A-T follows older trails) was blazed by Raymond Torrey. William Welch put up a lot of money to get the effort kicked off. Arthur Perkins was chairman of ATC wh…

Quote from Drybones: “Half the equation is in the whishey, the other half is the taste buds. I've had days good stuff was bad and days bad stuff was good depending on the buds.” They tell me that bud can make anything taste good. Especially junk food.

  • Quote from Mountain-Mike: “I have no problem with proper use of Spot or any PLB. It's people who think it's a "Get out of Jail Free" Card & a replacement for experience & good judgement. When it come to a point when a person considers turning around but thinks...Hey why not go on, I have a PLB if I get in trouble. A person should know their own limitations. I know I have pushed them at times. But many times I have decided the risks weren't worth it. A person has to take responsibility for their …

  • Quote from Mountain-Mike: “So before thinking on using that SPOT. Is it worth endangering other people?” If I ever have to light my PLB, I no longer have the choice of not endangering them. I will have endangered SAR by having the accident in the first place, and once I've had an accident, I know they're coming for me whether I light it or not. I see the PLB as offering some hope they'll be in less danger, by finding me faster and with fewer searchers. I'm not expecting that they'll be in time t…

Quote from SarcasmTheElf: “Kevin, it IS my business what's in your pack, but only because in the event of an emergency I need to know where your PLB is when we're hiking together. :D” And when we've been hiking together, I think you've seen virtually the entire contents of my pack. But I know you wouldn't tell anyone whose business it isn't. Am I to understand your remark as indicating that you'd go with me again?

Marketing of the .380 for the ladies? My auntie had a .25 ACP Baby Browning - which is a pretty pitiful gun for stopping power. But when she went to the range with my uncle's .357 she found that she couldn't aim consistently with it. The kickback always had her shooting high and to the left. She was a keen shot with the lighter weapon. I think that a .380 might have been just the ticket for her. Even most of the family didn't know she had a .25 auto in her purse. She never, ever discussed carryi…

Best to stop digging.
