Don't remember seeing this one before. Didn't remember it specifically from my hike either. But educated guess was it would have fit best in that town. Quote from LIhikers: “Yesterday I saw the doctor about that cracked bone in my leg and he's happy with how it's healing. He gave me the OK to start easy walking and bicycling on level surfaces. He thinks in another 6 weeks trails will be OK. That gives me hope for us doing the southern half of the AT this year. Since our son is the one who looks after our house, mail and other affairs we'll need to be finished by the time he plans to go away later in the year. To do that we'll start sometime in …

Interesting, but I question the accuracy. On Collegiate Loop this summer I could gain 4,000 feet over 12 miles. 4000 x 2 x 12 = 96,000. Square root of that is 309.8. Well beyond very strenuous (200). Never mind the altitude. I always thought I was a slow hiker. But perhaps I am not so bad after all.

Totally bogus. Benton MacKaye proposed Mt Washington. Then Myron Avery who actually built the AT moved it to Mt Katahdin. Sugarloaf Mountain is just where Avery and crew completed the AT by connecting Maine sections. And is where the placque is commemorating it. Sugarloaf is where I tore my meniscus in my right knee in 2018 and had to hobble down with my left leg and two hiking poles. Needless to say I remember it well.

  • Poca2525, Welome to the Cafe! I hiked the AT over 10 years NoBo (Nov 2010 to July 2021). Usually 2-4 weeks a year, but one was less than a week, another nearly 7 weeks. And of course nothing in 2020. I would recommend starting at Springer NoBo (skip Approach Trail) at beginning of May. 500 miles is a good target, but I would plan finishing around public transportation (preferably train stations, busses are the next best). Significant cost and time savings by planning appropriate begin/end of sec…
