PostMMMM, wine. Good idea!

Haha! Not a bad idea. I like twistwrist better because as soon as the doc allows, I'll be back on 2-wheels. Hey, TJ. No worries at all! How's the bike was the first question I asked while still laying in the middle of the track. LOL! Right there with ya girl! She's totaled. :(:(Good news, insurance is covering, and she was still worth what I paid for her. So now I get a new one.

Thanks all! I broke my thumb in 3 places and suffered a compression fracture in T-6 in my back. Gotta wear a back brace for a few weeks and thumb may need surgery. Luckily I'm not Humpty Dumpty. I will eventually be put back together again. I've actually got the entire sequence of pictures that tells the whole story. No apology needed hikerboy. Thanks. There are plenty more butt shots captured during the tumble. lol My poor bike is totaled. :(:( But insurance is working with me so far.

Safety tips

PostQuote from Rasty: “Read the reviews on that bag carefully. It's for really warm weather only and has no insulation at all.” I agree. Seems like the guy was pretty full of **** (dammit, why can't we use the "s" word? lol!) then. I questioned a couple of things he told me. You guys are confirming that. He recommended I tarp tent. I didn't think that was great advice for a noobie. He also said the Bear spray is lethal comment and recommended this bag for the June-August part of my trip and said I p…

PostThat makes sense. I've got it on my list to research. It still seems it would be effective to use against an attacker and give one time to get the hell away.

Safety tips

PostWhat are your favorite random safety tips? I heard one from an REI employee who has thru-hiked the AT. He said that Bear Mace (is that the same thing as Bear spray?) is lethal to humans and could be used as a defensive measure if need be. He also recommended rei.com/product/870764/rei-travel-sack-sleeping-bag for a summer sleeping bag. I figure if I hike into the fall, I can use this as my liner and purchase a sleeping bag for colder temps.

Quote from TrafficJam: “You are fearless! Good luck in your race. :)” Haha! Thanks, but no, I'm definitely not fearless...I just have a pattern of not letting fear stop me. Quote from Astro: “Quote from twistwrist: “Quote from jimmyjam: “Top speed 150mph, wow that's fast.” I had fun pushing some speed on my GSXR-600 for a while, but my favorite bikes are my little ones...my former 250s and my current 300. In the corners, we are grinning the widest. Those little bikes are fun to flick around!” Ju…

Lightening storms

PostQuote from Tuckahoe: “I have posted this many time before, but it is my absolutely favorite hiking/camping video. That, and I just love storms... youtube.com/watch?v=YsICgcSzfm…S4qw7RugGZUnyfDQ&index=38” Those guys are pretty damn funny! Thanks for sharing! That was pretty awesome. So, noob question here, what was thtat kind of set-up they have? A hammock and hammock tent or something? Looked cool.

Quote from Tuckahoe: “That's pretty cool. My father's name is Richard Petty... and imagine being a kid in the south in the 70s and 80s with a name like Petty. Many years back while driving through western North Carolina dad was speeding up I-40 about 2am when we get pulled over by a cop, not at all happy that we were speeding. He saunters up to the car yelling out "who do you think you are, f#@$ing Richard Petty something?" And asking for dad's license and registration. He looked and looked agai…

Lightening storms

PostQuote from jimmyjam: “Get to a lower elevation on the trail as quick as you can. Do not seek shelter under solitary trees. If you feel static electricity or your hair rising up then chances are lightening is about to happen and they say to squat down in a tight ball and try to have only the balls of your feet touching the ground and cover your ears. If you have a foam pad, squat on that. Drop your hiking poles if they are metal. I've never had to do any of the above, but I have weathered some pr…

Lightening storms

PostI've read a lot about people getting stuck on top of a mountain in a lightening storm. What do you all do? Obviously the goal is to plan ahead and try to be in a town or a shelter before storm hits, but seeing as how I'll be hiking in the summer, pop-up storms are quite frequent. What's the best strategy?

Beer

REI classes
PostQuote from hikerboy: “you dont need hiking classes.” I had a blast, met new people, and learned a thing or two. So why the hell not? I'll take another because I truly enjoyed the experience. I'll stick to the free classes other than a 2-night hike planned in March. I'll pay to attend that one.
