  • Apex vs Down?

    jimmyjam - - Gear

    Post

Quote from odd man out: “I currently have a 40 deg hydrophobic down quilt for summer use. I need to upgrade to a three-season sleep system. I am considering a 20 deg Enlightened Equipment quilt which come in down and Apex. I am attracted to the Apex due to its low cost and performance in damp conditions. I understand the up sides of down (compressibility, weight, eg), so no need to comment on that. I specifically wonder if the temperature ratings of the two are comparable. Is it reasonable to ex…

I could only get away for one night, but you gotta take what you can get. I went to Hightop Mountain in the SNP for probably the umpteenth time. I like this spot because it's a got a good climb to give my legs and cardio a workout, great views, great sunsets, and usually no crowds. It's nearly always extremely windy and yesterday was no exception. I got up to the summit about 4 pm and scurried the last .5 mile down the other side to Hightop Shelter, filtered water for the night, threw up my tent…

I prefer flour tortillas but like corn well enough and it has a lower glycemic index so a combo might be perfect. Of course, it’s a lot of wasted effort when I can buy better and cheaper at the store but I guess you can say that about most of the things that I like t…

Took a 18 mile bike ride today in Pocahontas State Park. While there were other people there, I only crossed paths with one other biker and only around six people walking the trails. That Coho trail sounds very interesting!!!

  • They had sponsors and rich parents who shuttled them around and flew them from trail to trail so they could hike different parts of each one in the best season. They also did a fair amount of slack packing, but still an accomplishment.

I get a hot spot on that same spot. I've learned that as soon as it starts, I stop and clean my feet and duct tape the balls of my feet and the side of my big toe because it gets sore too. Never had a blister using the duct tape.
