  • Hiking plan for 2024

Yesterday I saw the doctor about that cracked bone in my leg and he's happy with how it's healing. He gave me the OK to start easy walking and bicycling on level surfaces. He thinks in another 6 weeks trails will be OK. That gives me hope for us doing the southern half of the AT this year. Since our son is the one who looks after our house, mail and other affairs we'll need to be finished by the time he plans to go away later in the year. To do that we'll start sometime in the spring months. May…

How about weather? If it's too hot or too cold it makes it harder for me. Heat has more affect on me than the cold. Mid 60s is ideal for me. Of course then there's wind, rain, and snow.

I'm wishing for snow this year in southern New York. It's years since I've gotten to use my snow shoes.

and now I'll never get to see it, oh well.

  • Scotty, I never felt unsafe but we never camped near a town, always in between. What TJ described above is the town/city of Connelsville. There we stayed in the nearby hotel so we could shower and do laundry.

Quote from max.patch: “The AT just got easier for 2024 thru hikers. .......... ” Uh oh, Matt_C won't like that...

That's too bad, those "old" people are missing out on something great. ” Sometimes the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. ” Oh don't I know that, considering the physical problems I've had this year. Torn tendons and a broken bone in my leg have reduced my hiking miles this this year.

  • Welcome Stinkfinger. As a section hiker who has done the northern half of the AT all in summer months, I can tell you it can be hot and humid from West Virginia to Maine during the summer months. My wife and I are planning to do the southern half in 2024 so maybe we'll meet, depending on the where and whens.

I know that helicopters, and their operation, are expensive but $ 60,000 is crazy. That's what happens when there's no competion and when the 'customers' seemingly don't have a choice.

I guess I'll get a new copy of the Companion and the AWOL guide to look over. I like having a paper copy in hand.

I'd rather not use an app.if possible so I prefer a paper map or guide book. We don't have a start date. That may depend on our son as much as us because he'll be looking after our house and affairs.

  • I wonder how Matt_C would react to Grandma Gatewood's gear choices. I suppose her hike wouldn't be valid.

Even though my leg isn't fully healed yet I can't help but think about our plan to hike the southern half of the A.T. in 2024. We're thinking to start either in Harper's Ferry or Washington DC and hike to Springer Mt. In the past I've always used the AT Companion to plan our section hikes and the one I have now is from 2021 so I need a new, updated guide. Are there any trail guides set up specifically for people going SOBO on the AT ?
