  • Hiking and bicycling is what I did for conditioning prior to my two longest section hikes. In '90 since it was a spring departure, I did 2150 miles on a stationary bike in the months before the hike. That was also because I was recovering from a broken femur in spring of '89. But lots of weekend hiking in both cases. Eg., before the ~600 mile AT section in 2007, I section hiked the MA mid-state trail over a number of weekends.

But it must be done in one calendar year, so it is a timed event in that sense. If it takes more than a year, it's not really a thru hike at that point. Do you disagree? I'm aware that the certificate from ATC doesn't say thru-hiker or section hiker, it says something about 2000 miles. When ATC talks about thru-hiking, it is to describe the logistics of a typical 5 or…

  • Quote from AnotherKevin: “I have rather a phobia about gyms. (In my background, a gym is where your classmates beat you up while the teacher looks in in approval.) ” Ditto here, I hated gym class, always. The closest I ever got to a gym as an adult was martial arts classes, karate and Tae Kwon Do. I prefer my physical recreations mostly outdoors -- skiing, sailing, hiking, bicycling, that sort of thing.

I never got into night hiking much. I can see where it might work where the path is fairly level, easy to follow, and free of obstructions. A couple summers ago I ran out of daylight coming down off Camels Hump on the Long Trail. The trail was so gnarly I was probably moving at 1/4 mile per hour by headlamp. It was impossible. After about fifteen minutes of that, I found a place to pitch the tent and called it a night. In the morning I discovered I had made camp maybe 1/4 or 1/2 mile above the s…

Max, your argument hinges on the exceptions-to-the-rule and outliers. If you've defined the term thru-hiker to be whatever you want it to be or imagine it be, ignoring the more common usage, then there's no point discussing the matter any further.

Quote from max.patch: “thru hiking is not a timed event at all. ” How do you figure? At the outside, in one calendar year (or some such.) In reality, for most folks, something like five or six months. LASHing, on the other hand, is free-form.

Quote from Astro: “I am another slow hiker, so Astro definitely does not refer to my speed. But this summer by starting early, hiking late, staying out of towns, and never taking a zero, I was able to keep up with most of the younger thru hikers I was with for nearly 7 weeks. As matter of fact some had fallen behind me. ” A lesson I learned back in the day when I raced sailboats: you can win a regatta without ever taking first place in any one race. The key is consistency, avoiding mistakes, not…
