So sorry this is happening. My father has dementia and is in memory care near our home. As much as I wish he could live with my husband and I, we can't keep him safe unless one of us is awake at all times. I am sad when I visit him, yet glad to see him, and grateful he is well cared for. I have learned to not feel guilty for continuing to live my life, but he is on my mind much of the time. Such a hard thing for all. Prayers for you and your wife.

We will be on the trail in WV and Maryland this June. Previously we have section hiked in Georgia, NC, Tennessee, and Virginia, always in June as we worked for the school system and went during summer break, and have enjoyed the lack of mosquitos and flies in the south. We are wondering if we are more likely to encounter these in June as we move farther north this summer. Headnets needed? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am a recently retired middle school math teacher. Planning a hike feels a lot like a logic puzzle. Balancing the items I feel I need to carry to be safe/warm, and the weight of what I can comfortably carry. Balancing the desire to avoid the major bubble and the desire to leave late enough to be warm enough, etc. Balancing my desire to do a thru hike while I am healthy and still in my 60s with growing older and less healthy. Balancing my own dreams with my desire to help with grandkids, and gra…

in 2011 for our first section hike I purchased maps from the ATC. I see now that they are purchased through the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club and from Mountaineer Books. The maps were useful to get the big picture of where we were, and what we were likely seeing from viewpoints, but I didn't find little Appalachian Trail Guide books which were included very useful. We have used the AWOL AT Guide Books for subsequent section hikes and greatly appreciate them. That being said I have two questions…

The size of baby teeth. Definitely not sunflower or pumpkin seeds. My husband wondered if they could be tiny mushrooms. A mystery. Those I hike with have wondered with me what they could be. I am going out again this June, but farther north than I have been. If I see them, I will take a picture and a closeup. We have seen them multiple years.

Good morning! I have done 8 section hikes, between Amicalola and Atkins, VA. As I was a teacher at that point, they were all in June. While walking amongst rhododendron and laurel, mostly at the end of their blooming, I frequently noticed large scatterings of what looked like little white teeth on the trail. I figured they likely had something to do with the plants but couldn't determine the connection. Anyone else see these, or know what they were?

  • I have that book! Robert Alden Rubin, On the Beaten Path - An Appalachian Pilgrimage. But I never made the connection between the book and the poem, though they "lived" just a few feet apart for years. Thanks for the information, Astro. It will be the next book I reread. It has been a great literary day.

  • Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Max Patch. Amazing! Greatly Appreciated. Wintergreen

  • Does anyone remember when the ATC Magazine had a page entitled "The MInistry of Funny Walks"? Did this magazine have a different name prior to being called "Journeys"? I have found the Journeys archives, which go back to 2010, but this is not a part of those editions. I am looking in particular for a poem entitled "Why I Hate the Appalachian Trail." It was in what must have been a pre-2010 edition. I used to have this fabulous poem in a frame, but when we moved north it somehow didn't make the m…

LI Hikers, Thank you for the recommendation. I looked over the Double Rainbow specs and it looks great. I like the fact that it can become freestanding if necessary, and can have a liner for colder weather. Thanks for your time in responding. Much appreciated.

Any recommenations for a reliable and waterproof trekking pole tent? Could fit my husband and I without too much extra room. Both are 5'7 and are fairly lightweight. I have looked at online information and read reviews and specs. I would appreciate your advice or experiences.
