My Spartans were victorious last night, although it looked very dicey in the first half and early second. However, they outscored the Cornhuskers by 25 in the second half so won by a score of 80-67. whew. • Unless they've significantly upgraded the hostel, there's no freaking way it's worth $35/night. I stayed there in 2013; what a dirty hole of a place.

Great report Scotty! And beautiful pics. Thanks for those of us midwesterners and southerners who are too far away to come winter backpacking/camping with you hardy yanks (or should I say New Englanders). A little laugh at the hat incident. I've done similar with other objects, normally my phone. The Sharing of the Cheese sounds like it would be delicious.

Quote from IMScotty: “A clip from a Boston Globe article (behind a paywall) on the most recent fatality. Lt. Kneeland (of NH Fish & Game) was quoted in the article speaking against people hiking alone. I understand his perspective as a rescuer, but I also confess I do not want to be part of a world where 'hiking alone' is considered unreasonable. Perhaps these hikers with no Winter experience should not have hiked without more experienced guidance, but I oppose any blanket provisions against hik…

Thanks guys for the suggestions. They are twist locks. So, first I will try cleaning. We've had snow each of the last 3 days and more to come later today; total of about 7+" so far. So yesterday my friend & I went snowshoeing on the golf course that she lives on. Pretty strenuous but enjoyable as we were the only ones out so beautiful and peaceful. Saw a lot of deer tracks and some others that were probably squirrels as they went to trees and ended there. Warmed up with some chai tea.

Met my friend at Mayberry State Park yesterday morning and we hiked 4.1 miles. Walked on some of the horse trails and they obviously haven't been out much lately as there was hardly any horse apples on the trail and what little there was, looked to be weeks, maybe months old. Only a handful of cars in the parking lot so we never saw another hiker until the last 1/2 mile and he was a jogger. I have Leki poles and one of them has stopped being tight so I can't get it to stay the length I need. Any…

I started out very well with my resolution to walk/hike at least a mile 5 days a week and at least 10 miles per week. That went well until mid February when the artic weather blew in, I was able to bear about 2 days of it but by the 3rd day, my resolve weakened and it was downhill from there, particularly because on February 11 my husband received a diagnosis of myelodispastic syndrome MDS, basically low platelets. After a second opinion and a couple more visits with 3 different doctors, he star…

As walking on the stairs, i saw a small fox dart under the wooden boardwalk right below me. It was only a few feet away but I just got a quick glimpse of it before it disappeared under the deck so i couldn'tget a pic. I have Eddie Bauer down mitts. I love them. When I go out on my walks, I wear smartwool gloves with the down mitts over them. Then as I warm up, the mitts go in my pockets. This week I've been walking in weather in the teens with a lower windchill. I also wear them as I drive to work in the chilly, well way below freezing, weather. I wish someone, hubby/daughter, would buy a gift for me to put on my steering wheel to make it comfortable to hold with only a pair of gloves on. As far as hats, I bo…
