welcome to the cafe
PostFor those of us from MI? Maybe. But then I've seen questions that seem obvious to me when three contestants from other parts of the country have no clue. My wife (with two degrees from UofM) asked "Why would they do that?" I say "Duh, They are OSU a$$holes!"

North Country Trail
PostThis video has been all over the news. A boater caught a cliff drop at Pictured Rocks NL. The top of the cliff is where the North Country Trail follows the edge. I attached my picture of the trail through that section when I backpacked it 6 years ago. You have the option of hiking on the left side of the larger trees. Of course I walked right on the edge. youtu.be/7IPpEMLXAygappalachiantrailcafe.net/index…148a113824e1ca59bb850556c

We Suck
PostQuote from rhjanes: “Where did Dallas rank? We also have a WNBA team. And the Frisco's Rough Riders. ” So what constitutes "major league sports"? I have updated the calculations to include both the WNBA and MLS. If there is another league pretending to be a major league (I'm talking to you CFL) I'm not interested. I also lumped all the Tennessee and Carolina teams together. Here is the complete list. * City * Suckiness * Detroit * 16.2% * Cincinnati * 19.0% * Miami * 24.4% * Montreal * 31.1% * P…

PostQuote from IMScotty: “If you have tried to book a place to stay, rent-a-car, or flight this summer you know that the vacation starved masses are letting loose and you had better have made your reservations early. So when others Zig, the Stimpsons Zag Our destination at the end of this summer is Detroit! Looking forward to the Henry Ford Museum, Institute of Art, a Tigers game, Motown Records, and hopefully seeing a city undergoing an urban renaissance. Got a place in walking distance from the Ea…

We Suck
PostI did some recreational statistics the other day. The Q: Are the Detroit sports teams as bad as we think they are? So I took the final standings for MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL from the last complete (i.e. pre-Covid) season and ranked them from high to low winning % (points for NHL). Team were given a score from 0 to 100 equal to the % of the other teams whose record was worse. I then averaged the score for all teams from each metropolitan area having more than one team (e.g. SF, Oakland, and San Jos…

Naughty or Nice?
PostI would like to know why it's so hard to grow grass in the lawn but so easy to grow it in the cracks in the driveway.

Nice. Reminds me of the time I was on Sinking Creek Mtn on the AT in VA. It was early evening, the ridge was narrow and rocky, and I was out of gas. It was several miles to the next shelter and I suspected that once I dropped off the ridge there would be no camping spots until I got to the shelter. There was a tiny clearing the size of my tent footprint among the rocks just off the trail. I didn't think camping that close to the trail was appropriate but I didn't have any other good options so I…

Quote from rhjanes: “I just turned 49....well I just celebrated the 14th anniversary of my 49th.... (I'll save you the math, I turned 63) so yes, things hurt on a regular basis.Judgement, good point and also probably a big part of the issues. It's tough to dream of something and then find it a lot different than the dream, body limitations and such. Dehydration, also a very good thought. I've not seen any photo's of the person, gear or anything. It's always easy to sit at our computer and guess …

Naughty or Nice?
PostI saw that movie. My wife is a bird watcher. So on our walks, I will turn around to find she had stopped some time ago to watch a bird so I have to double back to find her. This is why our walks cover a half a mile per hour. She says it's some warbler she can't ID. I say it's small and brown so it's a sparrow, let's go. If it's large and brown and in the water it's a duck. Otherwise it's a Red Wing Blackbird. That covers about 90% of the birds I see. I'm not of a plant person.

Quote from rhjanes: “Quote from LIhikers: “very dramatic way to start a hike. I hope they are OK ” I wonder about this story. Preexisting conditions? And he's going up to start with those? Wandered around for quite a while. ” Well he is 59 years old. I'm about that age and could be described as having a whole boatload full of "preexisting conditions", in that on any given day, something hurts, especially if I've been backpacking. What I find more peculiar is he that he started Thursday morning, …

And In Other News
PostQuote from max.patch: “There's a few things I always do when I'm in Northeast -- and one of those is getting a lobster roll or three. (I can get them here but they lose something in the translation). But not at $34. In Maine this month, roadside lobster rolls were going for as much as $34 each. ” so it seems more people are cooking at home. They learned how to make a lobster roll. (Hidden Content)

A new book about the history of the AT was published this week. I have not read it yet. atbiography.com/ There is an excerpt here. This part of MacKaye's story only got a couple of sentences of attention in my book (The Appalachian Trail) published a few years ago by the ATC. - thedailybeast.com/the-tragic-o…-of-the-appalachian-trail
