Hiking plans 2021
PostStalking Tortoise, I am looking forward to hearing about your hike. On the bright side, maybe when you get back up that way I will be free to meet you in Gorham for a cold one. Usually my family is in the neighboring town (Randolph, NH) every Labor Day Weekend, but not this year.:( My wife and I do plan to do some leaf-peeping there for Columbus Day.

Hello Counselorman, welcome to the Cafe. I have only done short, weekend hikes in CT. I cannot advise on the entirety. Anyone else? One CT section I did had some pretty steep climbs, but they were of a reasonably short duration. No big mountains. Connecticut also has some easy strolling sections along the Housatonic River. I would think the hike you are suggesting would be a great section to start, especially if you plan on averaging a ten-mile pace. Where in NY did you plan to start your hike?

PostI would be so pissed off if that thing was blocking my view at a baseball game.

Quote from max.patch: “ Police are still investigating what happened...I'm curious what the final explanation is going to be. The whole possible "kidnapping" scenario makes no sense except as an alternative to how an adult could let a 3 year old with special needs get into that situation (which I totally can understand). Anyway, glad for the happy ending. ” I was glad this did not have a 'A Dingo Ate my Baby' ending.

Lightening strike makes sense, but I would think there would be at least some sign of trauma on one of them from that. Toxic algae? I would think they have already tested the remaining contents of their water bottle. They must have brought water with them, right? Sure, I could see one of them and the dog drinking some 'raw water', but all of them? Including a baby? Don't you make sure your one year old gets the water from home? It is perplexing. For now I'm just going with something is not right…

PostAdded a new ballpark to my list, Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. Nice park, saw a great 'come from behind' Tigers win. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…f07db4e639a22fe70654b025b appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…f07db4e639a22fe70654b025bTy Cobb, that mean SOB and one of the all time greats. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…f07db4e639a22fe70654b025bFrom the nosebleed seats. Still great seats, I I could move around the park and sit anywhere. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…f07db4e639a22fe70654b…

Quote from odd man out: “Cool. Wish I could afford an Airstream ” I lived in a 1950's vintage Airstream for a summer that I rented from a lady in Old Lyme, CT. It was beautiful. There was a small stream behind it that connected a lake to the ocean. I would come home from work, fire up the hibachi, and have a trout on the hook just as the coals were beginning to glow. That was a great summer.

Hiking & Biking
PostGreat pictures TJ. Looks like you could take a nice cooling dip at that campground. And was that a field of Goldenrod? Impressive.

I was really impressed that someone preserved that nearly 100 year old tent camper.

Quote from odd man out: “No real news on this most baffling case. google.com/amp/s/amp.fresnobee…cal/article253770788.html ” It really is baffling. I'm afraid the cause of death will end up being the most likely one. I will leave it at that for know, since we really won't know till they get the toxicology results.

PostI'll also state what is obvious, there are also many underutilized trails where people can still find solitude and peace. We know that, but the trick is getting this message out to the casual hiker.

PostI don't blame them, I'd want to see Ohtani at bat too. Still, that must sting when the home fans are booing you because they want to see an opposing player get a hit off you.

PostIt's picture Day! I only show you 10% of the tree photos I take. This photo got me thinking. There is a growing body of research on the 'social interaction' between trees, mediated by their mycorrhizal symbionts. Trees that nourish ea…

PostDay 5: Trees and Clouds are my Favorite Things: Horseshoe Meadow ==> Cottonwood Pass == PCT SOBO appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…f07db4e639a22fe70654b025bPCT/ Cottonwood Pass Trail Junction I always touch the end and start points of my sections to insure they link together to form a continuous path from Mexico to Canada. That is the goal I set for myself on this hike. My preference is that each section be completed NOBO (northbound) in sequence, but that ideal has fallen by the wayside right at t…
