  • Quote from Rasty: “Large cans like Fosters will be lighter % of aluminum per fluid ounce of beer. Beer weight could theoretically change based on the amount of CO2 which is lighter then water. NY requires ID for those that appear under 50 so card sarcasm.” so, fosters cans, but that means i have to pour the beer into hiker cups. otherwise i will have just increased the portion size, not reduced the total weight.

so, imagine a group of hikers was planning to get together (sometime soon), and someone wanted to bring beer. what is the lightest 6 pack of beer? my guess is that the weight of the beer is fixed, but the weight of the aluminum can is variable. Related questions: is it appropriate to card hikers before offering an alcoholic beverage?, is it acceptable to only bring one beer per hiker?, and how long does it take to freeze beer at 22 degrees, when the beer starting temp is 50 degrees? Oh, and is i…

  • Quote from milkman: “It's official, Christmas is over. Taking the tree down. Kinda hate to see it go and at the same time glad to get it put away. At least it's not like an oven in the attic.” is that a riddle? "when is Christmas like an oven in the attic?"

  • actually, the second night out there was a significant rainfall... at least that's the way i remember it, and i'm sticking with that story! i think i tried to use a plastic garbage bag to collect water overnight without much luck... the campsite had no water source -- definitely car camper territory.

what a pleasure for me to start a post with "i could be wrong HB, but..." i could be wrong, but i believe that the single dose administered immediately is to avoid the infection, so that no continued treatment is required. you never actually know if you would have gotten lyme disease in the one-dose scenario -- and you are right, the odds of getting it from a single tick were fairly small to begin with. and yes, i do have a lyme disease issue which is one of the six issues my wife gets to tease …

i read somewhere about the disadvantage our soldiers have when they are dropped off in a hostile environment, weather-wise. it takes time to get used to being outdoors in temperature extremes -- but you do get acclimated. where am i going with this? it always feels like hiking in the winter was a really really dumb idea for the first 45 minutes. then i feel fine. it always feels like sleeping out in the winter was a really really dumb idea the first night. then i feel fine. so: consider planning…

i love cut and paste. here's an anonymous post from some other hiking related web area. I think it is meant to make sure AK feels the love: ...it'll be worth coming just to see me sneak up behind Another Kevin and give him a big hug! and you can't herd cats, anyway... that's what i say. 10 day forecast shows us at just about average temps for the trip -- likely above freezing daytime and mid twenties nights... and not looking like any snow cover. It'll be like winter in Georgia on a good weekend…
