AT 2024
LIhikers - - AT Specific
PostQuote from max.patch: “The AT just got easier for 2024 thru hikers. .......... ” Uh oh, Matt_C won't like that...

Quote from max.patch: “Quote from LIhikers: “That was interesting. It seems there are very few hikers in my age bracket, 70s. That's too bad, those "old" people are missing out on something great. ” Sometimes the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. ” Oh don't I know that, considering the physical problems I've had this year. Torn tendons and a broken bone in my leg have reduced my hiking miles this this year.

Welcome Stinkfinger. As a section hiker who has done the northern half of the AT all in summer months, I can tell you it can be hot and humid from West Virginia to Maine during the summer months. My wife and I are planning to do the southern half in 2024 so maybe we'll meet, depending on the where and whens.

PostQuote from odd man out: “Tonight we had a once in a lifetime celestial event when Betelgeuse was occluded by a passing asteroid. Unfortunately, in Michigan it was occluded by clouds. ” what's a Betelgeuse ?

I know that helicopters, and their operation, are expensive but $ 60,000 is crazy. That's what happens when there's no competion and when the 'customers' seemingly don't have a choice.

Hiking plan for 2024
PostI guess I'll get a new copy of the Companion and the AWOL guide to look over. I like having a paper copy in hand.

Hiking plan for 2024
PostI'd rather not use an app.if possible so I prefer a paper map or guide book. We don't have a start date. That may depend on our son as much as us because he'll be looking after our house and affairs.

Hiking plan for 2024
PostEven though my leg isn't fully healed yet I can't help but think about our plan to hike the southern half of the A.T. in 2024. We're thinking to start either in Harper's Ferry or Washington DC and hike to Springer Mt. In the past I've always used the AT Companion to plan our section hikes and the one I have now is from 2021 so I need a new, updated guide. Are there any trail guides set up specifically for people going SOBO on the AT ?

LIhikers - - Coffee Talk
PostQuote from odd man out: “You can have a bit of a conversation on the FB Group, but they are ephemeral. ” So far I've stayed away from Face Book and most other social media as I didn't want to spend the time with my face in a screen. Now that I'm retired and my time is my own I might give it a try.

LIhikers - - Coffee Talk
PostIt seems to me that many people are no longer interested in having a conversation. They just want to make a statement and move on. I recently read an article that said that the #1 thing that causes young people to be anxious is having to talk with people. I find that sad as I enjoy talking with people, even total strangers.
