It dropped below freezing last night with freezing drizzle, and there were lots of accidents on the Interstate and county roads. The sheriff's deptartment was asking people not to drive if possible. There is no snow on the ground, and temps have been above freezing during the day in December, thus our crocusses and daffodils have begun to peek through the soil.

We stayed there in 2011 and 2018. Both times we were fortunate enough to find a sleeping space on one of the two platforms to the front of the shelter, enjoying the view of the mountains and night sky. The privy seat was totally bedazzled with stick on sparkles. I will miss it when I come through next spring, and I will be sure to stop and remember good times.

When my husband and I hiked from PenMar to Harpers Ferry last June we were very deliberate about our food weight. We were hiking with a 75 year old friend, and wanted to be able to carry some of her items in addition to ours if needed. That being said, as we hiked in to Harpers Ferry we had eaten all but one granola bar. It was confirming to us that we could make a good food plan. Our friend, whom we have section hiked with since 2011, was amazing, strong and determined, and we didn't need to ca…

Agreed. 61. It is freeing to dress however I feel like dressing, and to go out in public without fixing my hair. I am still careful with my words because I know they can build up or tear down. I still seek to be kind and encouraging.

She did very well. I kept her on a leash which was good as we came upon a large rattlesnake on the long trail to water at the Ensign Cowell Shelter. I made sure she had plenty of water, snacks, good quality food. Used Mushers Secret on her pads to keep them supple. She slept in or on my sleeping bag depending on temperature. Great with other dogs and people. Barked like crazy at every chipmunk or squirrel for 40 miles. It just took a lot of my focus and energy to care for her. This was her secon…

My hiking partner of 12 years wanted to do one more hike. She just turned 75. We did a slow and steady hike of Maryland, from PenMar Park to Harpers Ferry. I used it as a shakedown of gear I plan to use in 2024. We took my collie mix dog. She was great, but half of my attention was on her and how she was doing. I will not be taking her next spring. I was very pleased with the gear choices.

Our first backpacking trip was on the Ice Age Trail in Wisconsin. June 2008. I took my 12 year old and 18 year old sons. We did 375 miles in a month. In 2011 another son and I did 2 weeks on the AT, NOBO from Hot Springs. Since then each of our 4 sons and three of the four daughters in law have backpacked with my husband and I, Ice Age Trail, Superior Hiking Trail, Appalachian Trail. Now we are looking forward to taking the grandkids on adventures. What amazing bonding happens when experiencing …

Astro, thanks for the advice. I have hiked from Amicalola to Neel Gap in 2015. Our shuttle driver, Ron, advised that it was very dry and water sources were frequently dry or iffy. He advised that we take the Len Foote trail, which we did. My eldest and youngest sons (2 of 4) were with me, and the eldest is an architect, so he really enjoyed our 1/2 hour break at the Hike Inn. We stayed at the Black Gap shelter that night. I want to experience the approach trail even if it isn't exciting, thinkin…

Thanks for the advice, Max Patch. Would you say having to time your hike to the post office hours is a consideration also? I would need to be back to my job in June 2024, but do realize that it could be a cold start. Beginning of March, perhaps? I believe I can do an overall 12 mile average, slower starting miles, picking up distance as I go along. That is 89 days to Harpers Ferry without zeros. We shall see how it comes together. More zeros due to weather with an early start anyway?

I am planning for what I am calling a HASH hike beginning in Late February. Half @$% Section Hike. I will be 62, and my job has offered me a 3 month personal leave of absence. Perhaps they too can see that I am growing older, and it is time. I believe I can hike from Amicalola to Harpers Ferry in three months. About 250 miles of this will be going over familiar trail from earlier section hikes. I can receive the same amount of leave for the next summer to hopefully finish the trail from Harpers …
