  • Trekking Poles #2

    GoodGerman - - Gear

    Post

I used Black Diamond Trail poles on the AT. Payed like 50 € for them but had to replace the tips at least 4 times. Tossed them in a garbage can in Washington DC because people looked at me like I am some sort of freak. City dwellers.. I got the Gossamer Gear LT4 now (they are on sale right now, fyi) and they are definately great poles. Not sure if they would last an entire thru - but I like the feel and the weight of the poles. Will thoroughly test them in AZ/UT in the next months.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Dakota Joe? I am getting married soon in the States and was wondering if I could pitch him on the PCT Best, Phil

  • I started Feb 2 or so in 2014 and actually completed my thru. AFAIK there are only 2 other guys (hudson + dacota joe) that started early and completed their trip as well. Thought it was a good idea to start early and beat the crowd. It's not though. Here are some reasons for the southern states: - Heavy loads, you will carry almost twice as much weight as a mid march starter - It will be brutally cold as soon as you make it to North Carolina - GSMNP will be a pain to hike through, due to heavy s…

I love my spoon so much, I use it in my office now to tackle muesli - every day.

  • Merrells?

    GoodGerman - - Footwear

    Post

Used Ventilators from Damascus to Delaware Water Gap. Good shoes, solid, sturdy and comfortable. They got me through the PA rocks just fine. Also heavy and chunky so I switched them out for a pair of Adidas AX2 that got me all the way to Katahdin. Would recommend the Merrels to people who want something between a boot and a trailrunner.

I have a schizophrenic relationship with my mummy bag. Love the warmth and the protection from drafts - hate the narrow cut and the weight. In the winter time I would always opt for a mummy bag. It is just great to have a hood, a draft collar and a sealed environment that traps heat better than a quilt. Also easier to put a hot bottle in the bag. Sure, it sucks that the insulation on the bottom is compressed and therefore useless but at least down gives you the option to distribute insulation to…

Deuter in Europe is pretty much what Osprey is in the US. They make quality backpacks, use great material and have nice suspensions. For many of my friends Deuter was their first dedicated backpack for the outdoors. All but one stopped using them because they are just too heavy and have way too many bells and whistles. I think there are better options out there that are lighter and pretty comfortable to carry. ULA and Six Moon Designs come to mind.

I used this one on my thru: (also carried a Spyderco Manbug to cut stuff) XSCT-001-03_grande.jpeg Took me a while to find a titanium spoon that is full sized, not crazy shallow and has a little keyhole on the handle. I put some reflective guyline through the hole and attached it with a small s-biner to my zpacks foodback. So I could only pull on the cord to get to the spoon. Worked pretty well.

Get Yogis 2015 PCT guidebook when it comes out and start from there. Everything should be in there. She also offers a printing service for the maps. Once you figured out your resupplies, start packing mail drops. The other stuff like the water reports will come together before you head out. They also have a little gathering where the water situation and trail angel network is addressed. Gear is easy. Zpacks, Hyperlight Mountain Gear and other cottages like Enlightened Equipment should get you a …

  • On this trip I met a lot of naysayers. It boggles my mind that even after 1700 miles of hiking thru ice, snow, rain, mud, bugs and over mountains, puds and interstate overpasses people still tell me/us what we can't do and how we should do it. Naysayers have a hard time realizing that a successful thru hike attempt is not about comfort, convenience and easy going. A lot of times its just miserable suffering to get the miles under your belt. So just because these people are not willing to do it d…

  • My girlfriend is going to meet us in Baxter state park and bring some American flags too

Going to Riga Shelter today, Mile 1499,1. 686,2 miles to Katahdin to go. The whole hiking thing is starting to get to us. Every day a long day, every day the same routine. Oh well, in a couple of days we gonna be in Massachusetts, and then in Vermont and then.. and then.. and then. Feels like there is always a next place where you have to be.

  • Dacota, Sunny and I started around 8 at the Blackburn AT center and made it to the ATC HQ around 12. We are this years NoBos number 12 and 13. There are at least 5 hikers in the register we never heard of or met on the trail even though they claim to have started when Joe and I did. Sunny and me are taking a couple of days off to visit Washington DC. Joe may slow down a bit so we can catch up to him in a week or so. Phil
