  • Quote from Packrat: “I'm brand new to this forum so I have not had time to look for my specific question. I have done a ton of research on the topic but really haven't found any info relevent to my specific situation - only ultralight weight discussions. I am going to be a north bound through hiker in March of 2025. My situation is this: I want to re-supply every 7 days to minimize my time off trail. My base pack weight is 21 lbs but I am a water hog and will freak out if I get low. When filled …

Quote from odd man out: “Let's suppose I wanted to do a ~3 week AT section in May. Something like: - Springer to Standing Bear - Standing Bear to Damascus - Damascus to Stony Creek - Four Pine to Big Meadows - Compton Gap to Duncannon These are in the 200 to 250 mile range and selected to connect with previous sections i have done, but other suggestion appreciated. What would be your advice? As a bonus, picking a section where both trailheads could be accessed by public transport/shuttle would b…

  • In VT I did a 38 mile slackpack on a whim, then took two zeros to recover. at the church hostel back in 88. I guess it invalidate my thru-hike by your standards.

I was supposed to head north tomorrow to go with plan B: Hoking the Long Trail instead of Idaho Centenial Trail. May have to rethink things.

  • When I hit the kelso Vally section there was no water casche. after 15ish miles from the last water We came up to a cow pond complete with cows in it pissing & crapping in it. Back in 95 we hqd limited maps & were searching for altenatives. A few dirt bikers were driving by & we flagged them down & asked them to check their ORV maps. While we were doing this a pickup stoped by asking us if we had troubles. We explained our predicament, he said to throw our packs in the back of his truck, he would…

I alway thonk of Brice Hammock when people think thy are to old to hike. Met him on PCT in 95 . He was hiking with his daughter for the section & complaining she could only do about 15 miles a day. I last ralked with him at an ALDHAWest conference years ago & inquire about his recent hikes. He said he was getting to old for long hikes. He really gor beat up that year. decided on no more long hikes over 500 miles at age 72.

  • Hiker these days resupply about every 3 days. So a good resuppply point. Stayed there twice. Was nice place for first shower on the trail'

Quote from IMScotty: “Here are few things that surprised me in the survey... That 5% of hikers DID NOT see a rattlesnake (they must be oblivious IMHO). That 13% claimed to have seen a Mountain Lion (Bobcat maybe ) That so many hikers did not like the section from Belden to Burney Falls (I get it, hot & dry, but it is beautiful too). That 0.6% of the hikers DID NOT like the JMT. I was not surprised that I am in the tiny minority who does not use Apps (0.7%) I started out never carrying a phone, b…

Quote from IMScotty: “There is also an EMS in North Conway, although it is a small store so I would think their selection of rentals would be small. Still, worth giving them a call. ” EMS used to run their climbing store out of North Conway when the were still located in th Eastern Slopes Inn. Definately worth a call for rentals or even a climbing school.

Looks like 2023 will be the year I finally do the ICT. Due to the timing of it I have decided to do it SOBO. I posted in a FB group questions about where to fly in & shuttles. In less than an hour I got a reply. So, once things slow down after the NOBO bubble passes in mid July I am going to hop on the train & head out there. Hoping to be out there about two months or so.

It is so real. something that was your life that you loved for many months ends abruptly. When I was climbing Katadin I kept stoping & waiting for a freind that came to pick me up. He finaaly said to wait for him at the plateau. He soon came up to a guy starring at me as he described it as stated, "I thought I was doing good untill that guy passed me just bouncing up the rocks!" As the adreniline pushed me up, the thoughts of it ending sent shivers up my spine. It was over! Back to reality & rea…
