Quote from IMScotty: “Sure has been quiet in here this week. I hope that means you are all out there hiking! ” I got out to hike, we’ve had beautiful weather. My international sock knitting competition has started so I’m focused on that, made it through qualifications and round 1. Trying to plan a backpacking trip between rounds 2 and 3 but the timing may be too tight. Also busy fiddle playing…I have a new teacher for private lessons but he’s expensive so it’s only twice a month plus a weekly 2 …

I recently found some good, fleece-lined leggings on clearance for < $30…win! I’m very happy to find such a deal, especially since I was seriously considering Lululemon leggings (but only because I own stock in the company. They are very warm so will be good for the cold days but the extra thickness make them less flexible. Can’t wait to try them out but I’m not wishing for more cold weather.

My go lite Rush 14l is on its last legs and should have been replaced two years ago. That day pack has been well used and well loved but it’s time to go. The buckle is broken, the zipper pulls are torn off so are now pieces of yarn, the fabric is flaking in places, and it’s stained and disreputable looking. My problem is that I can’t find anything that I like as much as that pack. Every time I look, I get frustrated so won’t make a decision. Last month I finally decided to bite the bullet and fi…

It was a tough choice this morning, go hiking and enjoy a sunny, 65* day or stay home and finish my Fair Isle sweater. (I had to buy one more skein of yarn and it was Out for Delivery.) Life is tough sometimes. Hiking won. I only took 1 pic, trying to capture a steep drop-off but as usual my photography skills suck. Had a great time despite the usual relentless climbing then turning around and having to descend. It was a gorgeous day.

I feel that the sacredness of special places is inside of us and is always very personal, not an itinerary of places to visit. We make a place magical by how we experience it. For me, there’s a particular place where I rested, soaked in the environment, grieved for my sister, and felt very close to her. That’s my sacred place.

Lots of snow at my house and very cold (for this part of the country)…-1* tonight. I lucked out and don’t have to work until the end of the week so get to enjoy it! Spending my time baking, knitting, and fiddling. May try to walk tomorrow.

Recent work stress (life and death situations) has impacted my mental health so I’ve been baking for stress relief. I’ve been working hard to get my sourdough starter the healthiest it can be by balancing the homofermentative and heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria and baking bread nearly every day to perfect technique and it’s paying off. This morning’s bread finally has the bloom that has been missing for a while. I’m so happy! I’m also finishing up pizza dough that’s been fermenting in th…

Temps were mid 30’s with a slight breeze on my walk yesterday. I wore a lightweight LS tech shirt, a light, down vest, a fleece pullover as my outer and basic leggings (and hat and gloves). Despite exerting myself on the hills, my arms and legs were cold. I thought the vest would warm my core and the warmth would spread to my limbs but it didn’t work. A heavier, midweight LS shirt with merino or other warm fiber would have been better and another layer on my legs. I’m still looking at fleece lin…

We’ve all hiked enough and should have our cool/cold weather clothing system figured out but this is the time of year that I evaluate what I’m wearing and think about what’s working and what isn’t. I’ve only added one item in the past few years…a pair of merino wool glove liners, but like to hear about new stuff on the market. One fabric I’ve read about is alpha direct fleece, a polartec fleece that supposedly keeps you warm while active but is terrible in the wind. A particular problem of mine …

  • Quote from IMScotty: “Thanks for the trip report LI Hikers. Sorry to hear about your leg. Tell me, it sounds like the GAP trail goes through some urban areas. Did you feel safe camping near them? When I was a kid the train tracks in town is were we all met up for mischief. I imagine things have not changed that much for 'rail trails.' Scott ” When I biked it, there was one town with shelters next to a grocery store (I’ll have to find my notes for the town name). Homeless people wandered around a…

Lots of walks and hikes with these two girls the past week. We had so much fun! And carrying a toddler piggy back up steep hills is great training for backpacking. I’m back home now and had a good walk today on some local trails. It was chilly, 36*, but my clothing choice was perfect. Since my Nov 6th hike, my foot has felt really good. It hurt on that hike and I wonder if it was scar tissue getting stretched and broken down…I was starting to worry that it was as good as it was going to get.

Quote from IMScotty: “Glad to hear your foot is getting better TJ And that sandwich looks delish! ” It’s still not 100%. I get pain in the mid foot from the hardware so compensate by not walking correctly then get pain in my hip and groin. But overall it’s better and I love that my shoes fit. I’m definitely ready for some short hikes with a backpack!

Quote from Time Zone: “Last week I was lucky to get in two hikes out in Arizona. The first hike was Gateway Loop in the McDowell-Sonoran Preserve, near Scottsdale. It's a moderate 4.5 mile loop around McDowell and Drinkwater Peaks, with about 700+ feet of elevation gain (and loss). Mrs. Time Zone and an old hiking friend joined the fun. It was fairly rocky and, being desert, very dry and exposed. The next morning I went to do Camelback. I had previously been to the top via the Echo Canyon Trail,…
