Quote from IMScotty: “I must be on the other side of the spectrum. I don't want most of the items on his list. The one I sometimes take is a pillow. I really don't have much use for it when I am hammocking, but I use it as a stuff sack for my extra clothes anyway. The one I would give a try is the Leuko tape. He is right, the Mole Skin usually fails. After that, I don't use poles, I have a bladder but stopped using it, no satellite for me, no cell phone - so no apps - I use paper maps. Yah, I'm …

On the Tony Kornheiser Show the other day, he recalled the one time he met Bobby Knight. They were at some practice or scrimmage on the sideline, and Tony commented to him, "You know, I would never play for you." The story as told continues: "And he looked at me, and he grabbed my stomach, in a particularly flabby area right above my belt. And he squeezed so hard, I thought I was going to go down on the ground. And before that happened, he looked at me with his half-evil smile, and he said, 'I'd…

Last week I was lucky to get in two hikes out in Arizona. The first hike was Gateway Loop in the McDowell-Sonoran Preserve, near Scottsdale. It's a moderate 4.5 mile loop around McDowell and Drinkwater Peaks, with about 700+ feet of elevation gain (and loss). Mrs. Time Zone and an old hiking friend joined the fun. It was fairly rocky and, being desert, very dry and exposed. The next morning I went to do Camelback. I had previously been to the top via the Echo Canyon Trail, and this time I though…

Welcome Packrat! I'm similar to you in anxiety about running low on water. I suspect that you'll do some training between now and 2025; perhaps you could hike some AT sections or similar trails and see how you do, water-wise. Much (then, or in 2025) will depend on any drought conditions. Sometimes, even in a drought, there are water seepage sources to be found, but you have to know where to look, and you may have to have a pump-style filter because it's not likely going to be dripping off a rock…

The BRS 3000 might be underpowered enough to max out at simmer for medium to larger pots, and/or in a breeze. I would think any variable valve canister stove could do it, but as the video above indicates, sometimes there's not much of a turning radius between "off" and "full throttle" A friend of mine just ponied up for the MightyMo. It's an impressive system, but very expensive.

Some topical reading material to enhance the trip could include John Hodgman's Vacationland (subtitled: True Stories from Painful Beaches). Professor Wikipedia claims "Vacationland was a finalist for the 2018 Thurber Prize for American Humor." Have fun!

  • Quote from Espeycaver: “I read it differently. Must means you have to have a bear canister, which is not true. ” Well, you were the one who originally brought up "must", in reference to "SMNF requirements" (whatever that is - it's not clear from this thread). I can't speak to those. I was referring to what Traffic Jam lined to above in post #125. Those apply to "All National Forests administered in the Southern Region". And the term "must" is NOT used in that document w/r/t bear canisters. You c…

  • Quote from Espeycaver: “Not sure the ATC can "require" anything but I may be wrong. I just read the SMNF requirements. It says food must be stored in non pliable bear canisters. Then it goes on to say If you choose to use bags to store food it must be hung 12 feet...6 feet. Wait a minute you just said "must use canisters" so are canisters required or not?well this response is being attached to my post, not in a new box, technology. Guess I'm a stickler for words. Their website says "must" use no…

Quote from Espeycaver: “I have a Six Moons Design 2p. Decent. Haven't had it in the rain yet. Had the company seam seal it. Single wall. 28ozs. ” What did you think of the job they did on the seam sealing? It appears to me their QC reputation is hit-or-miss. I am tempted by the Lunar Solo - it may be the smallest-packing 1p shelter short of a bivy sack, at least among the contenders I have considered. Floorspace is great but much of the "extra" (beyond your sleeping area) is low-volume, due to l…

  • Reviving Sawyer Squeeze

    Post

Recently a clogged/low-flow Sawyer Squeeze was passed down to me by someone who simply bought a new one. Having restored my Sawyer Mini before with a vinegar soak and backflush with distilled water, I did that with the Squeeze and it seems to flow adequately well now. Should I do a backflush with bleach water before putting away for longer term? I don't typically do that with the Mini. What I do is shake it out as best I can after backflushing with distilled water, then let it dry out. (I soak i…

"If you've never been to a Waffle House, just imagine a gas station bathroom ... that sells waffles" - Jim Gaffigan I think it was in his book Food: A Love Story that he had a picture of a Waffle House sign with the "W" missing, and said something about being grateful for the truth in advertising.

They worked fine for me. I was hesitant to seitch as i liked the notch, but the XMid feels a bit roomier inside and is sil poly which performs a bit better than sil nylon. Plus Gear Aquisition Syndrome makes ot hart to redist the coolest, hippest new thing on the block. ” Thanks for the food for thought on the Trekker and Tar…

  • Quote from odd man out: “The Skyscape Scout by Six Moon Designs is an affordable tent by a reputable company. It's what I started with before moving up to something better. It is a trekking pole tent, which means you can use trekking pole to support it, and it has to be steaked out in the corners. You can get tent poles if you don't use trekking poles. ” If it's not too much of a thread drift, can you tell me why you moved on? I've eyed the Skyscapes (scout, trekker) for years and am finally com…

I had something very similar passed down to me that was for golf. Maybe I should have kept it, but the short sleeves made it seem pointless for cool or wet conditions. It was light. Not sure how water-resistant it was.

Tempted to reply with sarcasm and feigned frustration, but don't want to give anyone a heart attack. No, it's a pretty neat area and I didn't mind the brief crossing of the golf course (from one wooded area to another); I've experienced that before at Sewanee's Perimeter Trail. Though this was a longer diversion, but still, not a bother. Frankly I should have read up more about the area - that there are times when you might want to wear blaze orange because it's on public land, and consequently,…

The just give you new ones. I've worn out a few and got the replaced. ” Necro-reply: how worn out did you make the DT socks before you returned them? I have a few pair that are threadbare (no more cushioning in key areas) but don't actually have holes in them.
