I had to put my mechanic skills to work to get our hybrid bike (that my wife usually rides) working correctly. First the chain needed to be replaced as it was worn too much. Once that was done the chain would skip when hard pressure was applied to the pedals. That's a sign that the cassette ( or freewheel) is worn and needs to be replaced. With that done the bike is working just fine now.

It was a beautiful day here on Long Island and Kathy and I didn't have anything we needed to do so we spent the afternoon going for a walk. We walked a trail that's not well known so we didn't see any other hikers or cyclists. We didn't work hard plus took a few breaks along the way, to relax. All in all we covered 7.8 miles in about 3.5 hours, including breaks.

You probably already have most of the clothing you'd want for winter riding. A couple of layers on top, under a jacket to break the wind. Long underwear on the bottom, possibly under shorts if a second layer is needed on your legs. A warm pair of socks, gloves, and a hat, headband, or buff depending on the temp. If you ride with a helmet make sure the hat fits underneath. Most of what I wear in winter is clothing I already had for hiking. Booties that fit over your shoes are helpful to keep your…

Quote from rhjanes: “I had two busted lawn gear. I did the yard on Friday because of RAIN due Saturday. My blower, the ignitor (coil) gave up. It was just $20 more to replace it. They replaced the fuel lines in my string trimmer. I got almost done trimming, hit the head to release more string and....the head (plastic) started coming apart. Dang thing is only about 10 years old! Cheap plastic..(JK). I finished up and bought a new string head. ” and the old guy says "they just don't make things li…

The company I retired from put me in for the Fedeal Aviation Administration's Master Mechanic award. They also presented me with a gold plated ratchet wrench engraved with my name and " Master Mechanic". I wish I had worked for them longer than I did, it's a good place to work.

Today was a beautiful day, mid 60s, little breeze, blue sky and bright sun. We took our bicycles out and did a leisurely 10.24 miles. Very enjoyable! Pretty much just the opposite of Race Across America.

I've seen videos of Race Across America before. It's amazing what the participants put themselves through. I guess it's like what people do to attempt a FKT on any of the long trails.

Today it was 5.75 miles around a lake in a local county park. While I didn't take any photos we saw several kinds of water fowl, ducks, swans, geese, as well as osprey, wood peckers and other birds. All kinds of plants are starting to bloom as spring sets in. Today was in the low 50s with a 15 MPH wind. The wind made it feel chilly when we stopped walking but it was warm enough when we were moving. I'm starting to think I should start keeping track of our mileage.

  • I just read that there places declaring a state of emergency because of the eclipse...really people, what's up with that ?

Quote from odd man out: “There were reports of Snow Geese in an industrial park in Zeeland, so we went to find them. If we failed, it would have been a figurative wild goose chase. But we did find them, making it a literal wild goose chase.appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…c6da513463b9572a0b4202d80 ” Good looking birds.
