    Kathy and I got to Harriman S.P. about 1PM on Friday and started walking just a little after. It was in the low 50s with a pretty good breeze. During the drive to Elk Pen parking lot we decided to overnight at the Big Hill (I think that's the name) shelter area. 3.7 miles in and a lot of it was up hill. Since it rained the night before there were a lot of puddles and mud. Also all the streams were running high and fast.. We got to the area, set up our tent and walked over to the shelter. It turn…

    Kathy and I are planning an overnighter for this coming Friday into Saturday. It'll be the first since I had had the bone in my leg crack. We've decided on Harriman State Park but haven't picked a place in the park. We'll be looking for someplace that isn't too wet. We're having a big rain storm tonight.

  • give them time during the day to play; climb on rocks, splash in streams, or swim in a pond or lake. If they have fun they're more likely to enjoy the trip and want to do it again. Oh, and make sure to have a camp fire at least some of the nights. I know both of my sons really enjoyed camp fires.

  • Matt , you said " ...whine about it being too cold ...." I've slept outside, on the ground without a tent at 34 below zero F. That was in northern Minnesota in middle of winter, so what's your experience with cold weather camping?

    While doing the southern half of the AT as one journey is a bucket list item, we'll adapt that list as needed. As we all know, life doesn't come with any guarantees. So as StalkingTortoise said, we'll adapt.

    It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission Other places on the AT consider you a thru hiker if you've hiked at least 50 miles before getting there, so maybe that would apply there too.
