On the coffee table: GMC's The Long Trail End-to-Ender's Guide (20th Edition) and associated 5th edition map. Some related blogs and other details on the trail. Dreaming. Pretty nice waterproof map. Level of detail is just about right, excellent printing. I wish they had made the widths of the 'strips' line up on the front and back so I could cut the map into four pieces. I suppose I can just buy another map ... Just finished: The Martian (picked up at the airport), like the good consumer that I…

Just finished 'Of Moose and Men - Ridgerunning in Maine’s Hundred Mile Wilderness' (after seeing it here). A pretty good read. What a neat adventure! I love 'work-for-adventure' jobs, and AT Ridgerunner has always intrigued. With some moderately-skilled editing it would have been even better: repetition & a kind of 'random' feel could both be tamed, punching up her stories. Do women really obsess about men like that? Whew! Exhausting.

Quote from AnotherKevin: “A couple of weekends ago, my hiking group was warned that a colony of Colletes inæqualis had nested right in the trail. The leader warned us to bee-ware and we made a bee-fuddled detour (bee-tour?) so that we wouldn't be bee-wailing our fate, being bee-sieged. ” Got whacked by a bald-faced (or some other kind of medium sized) hornet while running the Susquehanna Super Hike a few weeks ago. Only one sting on the back of my head, and we were going fast enough that we didn…

Quote from AnotherKevin: “Quote from HamSandwich: “My orienteering club has a lot of data too, in our OCAD maps, but many are not georeferenced, so it's a good bit of work (and I'm the only one even thinking about it) to go from those maps to OSM. The cold, dark, nothin' (well, a bit less) to do winter is coming though. ” There's a plugin to QGIS for image referencing. As long as your maps are to scale, it's not that bad to use. I used an orienteering map as the basis for this area before I spen…

Quote from AnotherKevin: “Virtually nobody even has decent data about trails any more. For instance, I think I have everything about the NY State Forest Preserve that the state has - and the trail alignments look as if they were digitized from a 1:100,000 or 1:250,000 scale map. They're really, really sloppy. When you go GPS grabbing, do you transfer the trails to OpenStreetMap? The work of citizen mappers like us appears to be all that's going to make the next generation of maps even possible. …

Quote from Drybones: “Quote from jimmyjam: “wait until dark and then all of the bees will have returned to the nest. Use your hiking light red mode as yellow jackets can't see red. Pour a cup of gas in their hole and cover with a board or brick. Do not light the gas. the board will make the fumes back up the tunnel to the nest. The fumes will kill them overnight. ” I'll try that, I did gas them, let it set a while and then burned it, I've been through three cans of wasp & hornet spray and it doe…

Quote from TrafficJam: “I scored a free, 2011 ARC Emergency Medical Response manual. I just started chapter 4. It's rekindled wanting to take a backcountry first aid course...and maybe a backcountry first responders course (?) ” I need to re-cert my WFR ... some day I'll have the time!! I'm out of practice, for sure. Did SOLO soloschools.com/wilderness-first-responder-wfr/ in ... sheesh, 2007? Pretty good course, but can't compare to others. Direct pressure and elevation. Indeed, orienteering builds navigational and in-woods movement skills and (probably more importantly) confidence. It's a fun game, too ... the balance between running fast(ish) and navigating well is a life long dance. The downside with the 'sport' side of orienteering (where I squar…

Fall's here, which means thinking about (pining for?) next year's adventures (Fall is booked solid with less fun things ). Thought I'd join up here and keep the planning going and excitement high. I'm mostly an orienteerer and trail runner, but my girls will soon be old enough to join me on the trail. So, a different pace and set of missions are important to continue fostering their budding outdoorsy selves, while maintaining a high level of fun for all. I love what I've read so far! Good topics…
