  • fybo141.jpg Hoping to put up a mini trip report about this - but in the meantime, have a photo from the camping trip we went on last weekend. It rained the whole weekend & got down into the 20s. We're still testing out our winter setup - not quite there yet. Had loads of fun!

Down PJs sound lovely, but I think I'll just have enough for booties. If I succeed, I'll share my project here!

Quote from TrafficJam: “How many jackets did you use for the quilt?” I used 3 jackets, sized XXL. I seam ripped them down to the core portions of the jacket (no sleeves, or collar) and then sewed them all together. I may end up trying to make some down booties with the leftover sleeves. I have another three XL jackets that I will be making for myself, and my husband will use the current one. And *thank you* rocksNsocks! I sent you a PM.

interlochen1311.jpg I made an underquilt from JCP puffer jackets that we scored on clearance for $14 each. Its a crazy Frankenstein quilt, but I feel pretty good about it for a first attempt and it makes a nice summer option with the hammock. I would LOVE some of the Tyvek RocksNSocks, if there is any left. I was getting ready to buy some for our upcoming trip. We need three pieces for the staging area under the hammocks. I also recently got some neoprene that I will be making into cozies for ou…

We looked up the Osprey online, and hes really interested. We're hoping to find a weekend to travel up to Chicago, so we can hit the big box stores to try some stuff on in person. Knowing what packs to zero in on will be a huge help.

I know that sweating will be inevitable, but hes hoping to find something to help him be more comfortable. Thanks for the recommendation HB. I'll certainly look it up!

I think I've decided to go with the ULA Catalyst for my pack, but my husband wants something with more back ventilation. (he sweats just sitting still) We looked at Zpacks Arc Blast, but need something that can carry more weight. I think we've got our base weight to 20 pounds, but don't want to push it any lower really. (still acquiring things, so that number is an estimate only) Are there other light packs that offer a back ventilation system?

Somebody had already made quick work of the ribs before we arrived. My friend Sandra, who lives on the property we were hiking, said they had been watching the decay all winter. Apparently the deer body showed up in the walking path, minus the head, and was just left there to rot. We did see a lot of coyote tracks that morning!

Quote from TrafficJam: “Shaved or cut dog hair is very difficult to spin (at least for me). It's better to brush it off when the dog sheds. If it's under 1", it's going to shed when you wear it. Warmth: much warmer than sheep wool, I've read it can be 80% warmer. Collect the fur from a shedding dog that lives in a cold climate and it's extremely warm.” I have two Bernese Mountain Dogs! I bet they would make some great yarn. Too bad I don't spin (or knit really).
