This isn't an AT trip. I probably won't see my first section of the AT until September. Taking my daughter section hiking tomorrow on her first hike longer than 5 miles. We are planning to go about 11 miles in the Allegheny National Forest from Amsler Springs, along Salmon Creek, and north to Cougar Bob's Tavern in Ketlletville for celebratory burgers and shake. Rain or Shine. (looks like rain) I'm very nervous about this trip because I can not begin to stress how important it is that she feels …

Quote from Astro: “So based upon your trail name” Thank you. for the advice. I've actually just learned (from this forum) that Trail Names are another one of those "things" I didn't know was a 'thing'. I don't actually have a trail name. still I do appreciate your seasoned friend's lesson. "just walking". I've decided to learn more about the ways to backpack the right way because for the first time in my nearly 30 years of "just walking" I will be just walking with my daughter. I suddenly feel v…

I've hiked most all of the loop but I did't notice the cut off section that dipped into Washington county. I'll miss the blue blazes but now we have the white ones and my daughter is old enough to join some of the fun.…

My name is Jamie Cave, and I'll be the forum member asking all the N00B questions. I've very recently moved from my stomping grounds in Ohio where I have meandered my whole life and very likely been down every footpath and trail, to Pennsylvania. Now I have all these new places to meander including the North Country National Scenic Trail and a section of the AT. I'm quite excited! To be honest I was very unaware that backpacking is such an involved hobby (a way of life for some) with it's own li…

Ooooh. I thought this was a term for a backpacking "thing" I haven't learned about yet. I'm learning a lot of "things" from this forum. I don't have any cool patches. -_- I guess there is one for completing the Buckeye Trail but I wasn't aware of it until a year later. I missed out on being able to display a tiny reminder of how I have a lot of free time but not enough money to leave the state haha!
