Being from South FL and living in TX, AR, Brazil, Singapore, and China the heat has never been the issue for me. But if it is, perhaps start at Springer and walk to Harpers Ferry.

Once that was done the chain would skip when hard pressure was applied to the pedals. That's a sign that the cassette ( or freewheel) is worn and needs to be replaced.
