I've been skiing since I was eight years old, that would be 1960. I've been a ski patroller as well. Skiing fatalities were more or less unheard of then. I started hearing about them in the 1990s. Craziness, I tell you... maybe blame it on Warren Miller? But hey, Snowbird as a world-class destination resort, so bound to attract a lot of craziness.

Quote from Dan76: “For some inexplicable reason, ski slope carnage continues. Sunday I was with a group of skiers when a skier hurtled by out of control. He impacted about 70 meters below us and from the outset, he appeared to have suffered nonsurviveable injuries. He was medevaced and pronounced DOA. The next day three of us were on a different slope when once again an out of control skier impacted rocks. A nurse initiated CPR until ski patrol arrived and took over. He's still listed as critica…

Quote from AnotherKevin: “Quote from rafe: “Seconds (unit of time) are very much part of the metric system, are they not? ” They are indeed. But seconds of impulse (dividing pounds of force by pounds of mass and saying that the units cancel) is just WRONG. ” But then, "pounds of mass" is an oxymoron.

Mice depend on messy hikers dropping food crumbs. Off-season, even AT shelters are tolerable in that regard. I had no issues with mice on my long 2007 section, except possibly at Calf Mtn. Shelter -- the southernmost shelter in SNP. And the issues I had there may well have been some other kind of critter, since it chewed up one of my pole straps and made off with a dirty sock. Any way you cut it, that shelter is a good one to avoid. Slo and I had no mouse problems at the shelters on the Monadnoc…

Quote from AnotherKevin: “Quote from rafe: “You can bet that the scientists and engineers who made that possible were using metric units. ” They were using an insane mix of units. I've seen Rankine for temperatures, a mix of nautical miles per hour, feet per second, and metres per second for velocities, and even specific impulses measured in seconds. (Pounds of force per pound mass of fuel burned per second -- AUGH! The SI unit would be m/s - newtons of force per kg of fuel burned per second.) E…

Quote from TrafficJam: “Quote from rafe: “Just my two tents. ” That magenta color is extraordinary. Does that really belong to you? ” An artifact of poor color rendition from my cell phone. It's nowhere near that garish. I think the color is called "burgundy" but I struggle sometimes with color names. That tent is 27 years old now. I haven't actually used it for a number of years but can't bring myself to part with it. It's traveled about half the AT, by my rough estimate.

I spend more time off the AT than on it, in the White Mountains. We're often crossing the AT, or meeting up with it at some point, but it's important to know the trails by their local names. On our Kinsman hike on Saturday, my hiking partner (who is a peakbagger with little interest in or knowledge of the AT) asked me, "So, is this the Cascade Brook Trail or the AT?" It is both. Here in the White Mountains, the AT consists almost entirely of local trails that predate the AT. My Franconia Ridge l…

I can't get the text in between the pics. ” That blue aluminum Easton stake is by far my choice of stakes, strong, easy on the hands to push in the ground and easy to get out...I replaced the standard 6" with 8" for more holding power in soft ground. ” Four of those came with my Tarptent. Which is odd, because you really need two more, to guy out the tent. Not that I'm a connoisseur of tent stakes, but they're plenty…

  • Sometimes it's just bad luck. Sometimes it's 1% or 0.1% chance of failure, but it happens to you. We aborted a hike up Kinsman yesterday because of high water in a stream. I didn't feel like rock-hopping over icy cold water, from one ice-covered rock to the next, while wearing crampons. Julie, with longer legs, made it across, but on the way back, got a boot full of ice water. It would have been tough going if we'd had to cross that stream and continue for miles. Sometimes it's best to let natur…

Yep, it looks like an impersonation attempt. (Why would they do that??) Several of my FB friends notified me, though I think all or most of them wisely ignored the friend requests. I was out hiking most of the day so I missed the excitement. I only caught wind of it in the evening. There's really very little I can do. It appears that the rogue account has already been removed. Looks like they may also have cloned my LinkedIn profile. Good thing I'm retired, LinkedIn doesn't matter that much to m…
