He wants to have lots of time to be adventurous. He doesn’t want work to rule his life. I suggested work 6 months, play 6 months but who would hire him for only 6 months? His good friend works for a non-profit and gets tons of time off for hiking/kayaking/adventuring. ” Get a job where he can get valuable experience fo…

  • One year sabbatical just about over

    PaulMags - - Coffee Talk

    Post

Hi all, Back and at the tail end of a one year sabbatical. I walked a bit, road tripped in between the two longish walks, and getting ready to move out of Colorado within the week. Going to go in business for myself with a mixture of IT support (residential and small business focused), probably some guiding when I get my WFR in the coming months, and more freelance writing. I don't expect to make what I earned as a corporate IT dude on the Front Range, but think I'll be happier. Anyway, hello ag…

Put my notice in. Last day is Sept 5th (being nice and taking my last on-call rotation in full. We go from Tues to Tuesday). Hiking the Collegiate Loop as a tune-up hike. Put my stuff in storage/wrap things up in September Take off for a Utah trek (not the Hayduke) for about 5 wks. Pick up my car back in Colorado, go road-tripping from late October/ Early Nov until ????. Camping, hiking, backpacking, and cultural sites are on the docket.

Quote from max.patch: “if i had 2 1/2 minutes with nothing else to do in the middle of the day i think i'd rather have sex than stare at the sun. that's just me, tho. ” It wasn't just about the sun. The wind died down, the temperature dropped, there was essentially sunset for 360 degrees on the horizon. You could see the shadow of the moon rapidly approach. I went to NE Panhandle as the light pollution is among the least amount in the lower 48 and the terrain is vast and wide open. Easily one of…

Quote from LIhikers: “I got to see the partial eclipse through a welding helmet. Am I the only one who thought "so what?" ” A partial eclipse is indeed "meh." A total eclipse is something else entirely, though. Easily one of the most amazing things I've experienced.

I've had people email out of the blue "Hey...so and so said you have plans for the eclipse and having a camping spot picked out..blah..blah..blah. Mind if I go and take some friends?" I said "We are going to [rough area], hope to see you there! " They took the hint I believe. As for caring, one of my close friends is astronomer. The way he describes a total eclipse makes it certainly sound like something I don't want to miss.

Not about to bring a down coat in the rain... Nor do most rain jackets fit the "lofty" description. I cleaned my beater puffy jacket. The "heavy" one with a thick zipper, thicker nylon shell, and I can stuff, take with me on high desert winter trips or in the The Badlands in December. Not only is it warm, it takes a beating from the harsh terrain, I can grab firewood, etc. My Montbell puffy with 7 oz of down fill is beautiful. But it is strictly for in camp when winter backpacking or maybe on hu…

On the plus side, this thread made me clean the coat. $9 at cleaners (less than the cost of the solution, plus many quarters and time!) Coat is all lofty again and looks brand new. Well, except for the patch I put on 8 years ago.

Two days of trail maintenance on The Colorado Trail. The first day was a solid 16 mile hike with lots of blow down clearing. The second day was more of a mellow walk through with lopping and similar trimming. The best part?

There is a strong chance that they will be successful, but we're not robots yet. ” REI and Dick's are both successful. B&M stores still have their place. They just have to reinvent themselves. REI sold the lifestyle rather well: - Coffee shops in some stores - Community rooms for local groups - Many talks - Classes (I am taking my NOLS WFA class there in two weeks for example) - Repair shops for bikes and skis - …
