  • Quote from LIhikers: “Me and Kathy are thinking of starting one of those hostels, that ruins the trail, here on Long Island. It would require a veeery loooong blue blaze side trail. ” No blue blaze necessary. You'll shuttle them to the hostel, and they'll dip into their trust fund money and pay you for the ride

    Trumps wall?

  • Depends on the kid. I'd try a weekend/long weekend first and then evaluate. I met a father who was hiking with his son for a month and he seemed to enjoy it. Of course he was missing school during this time (he was required a keep a daily log as homework). On the other hand, not everyone enjoys our hobby. Perhaps select a hike that has a convenient bailing out point(s) enroute. In Georgia, for example, if you start at Springer Mountain (the start of the AT) you will cross paved roads at 20, 30, …

Still making public appearances at 97 years old! This Saturday at Amicalola Falls State Park. From GATC FB post: Picture: scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v…8TBgbmMwTeEzQ&oe=65E218B7 Our very own Georgia native, Gene Espy, was the second individual to thru hike the A.T. in 1951, experiencing more wilderness, solitude and difficulties than today’s hikers. His book, “The Trail of my Life: The Gene Espy Story,” shares his A.T. thru-hiking adventure and many of the other activities he pursued for “fun.”…

Quote from Astro: “Quote from odd man out: “I've always wondered why refs insert themselves to try and stop altercations. I think it would be better to stand back and take notes. If both benches clear, you eject everyone, both teams forfeit. ” Because it is best to quickly address conflict and move forward. Your scenario could have teams fofeiting multiple games and a lot of lost revenue. ” Seems to me that if teams forfeited multiple games and the program lost money -- that would eventually cau…

The ATC has blogged an article about birding on the trail, which is a good read for those interested in the subject. appalachiantrail.org/official-…on-the-appalachian-trail/ But wait! There's more! The ATC has also jumped on the Taylor Swift bandwagon and released a TikTok video about "Appalachian Trail Birds as Taylor Swift Albums." I like Taylor but this effort misses the mark. Maybe they should pay her to date Warren Doyle. Or me. I don't have a TikTok account but I was able to view the video…

I guess these things come in threes. So far this week their has been a brawl in a mens basketball game that started in the handshake line and everyone got involved (the band kept playing until there song was finished ) and a brawl that started during a college womens basketball game. Here's last nights news. The report says that this years basketball games between Spalding (one of the teams involved) and Griffin were played without spectators. What they didn't say is that it was becasue a 17 yea…

We have a "Little Grand Canyon". <snip> "Uncover the layers of 'Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon' as you navigate the unusual geological formations created by erosion of the Coastal Plain after years of poor agricultural practices, hike miles of sandy nature trails, and gaze at dark skies while camping at Providence Canyon State Park." I've been there and it's a nice hike -- and much different than the N GA mountains -- but it never reminded me of the Grand Canyon. gastateparks.org/ProvidenceCanyon

Adam Silver realizes that once again the all star game was unwatchable. He was hoping for a competive game this year. I love basketball but I haven't watched the all star game in years. The NFL game was so bad they resorted to playing flag football instead. Baseball has a lot of issues but at least they have an all star game that is close to the regular product. Catch his excitement. He knew that the media was going to criticise the game today. And he was right. twitter.com/StephNoh/status/17…fe…

The Mt Leconte Lodge (similar to the White Mountain Huts) in the GSMNP uses llamas for resupply. There are 3 trails that go to the lodge. One actually branches off of the AT about 3 miles from the parking area at Newfound Gap, but it is not the one the llamas use. lecontelodge.com/faqs/our-llamas/

NONE of the answers given are correct. The question incorrectly assumes all of Doyle's hikes have been thru hikes. One half of his completions have been section hikes. Doyle has also NEVER done what thousands of other hikers have done -- which is to hike the AT from terminus to terminus while carrying his own gear without vehicle support. ALL of his thrus have been vehicle supported. Doyles number of completed hikes are impressive on their own merit without the need to incorectly embellish them.…
