After a trip to Scotland (mostly Edinburgh) last year in 2018, I thought a hike in the Highlands might be interesting. I have a sister who's a researcher and professor at the U of Edinburgh and lives in the "New Town" section of Edinburgh. Makes not having to deal with hotels really nice. Anyway, she took us, my son and I, on a three day trip to Mull, Iona, and through the Highlands in that area. That was the spark and it's all her fault. I started working and a hike of the West Highland Way. It…

Good stuff at a reasonable price point. My quest this week is to explore the bourbon offerings around Cincinnati and see if I …

Well, since last year's easy trip got blown up by some "undetermined mosquito-borne virus" picked up in the Florida Keys, I ended up going to Edinburgh, Scotland with my son (his girlfriend is in med school and they screwed with her time off). Also looking at 2020 - my son and I spent 2 weeks in Edinbugh, Scotland in August. (Note to self - avoid Edinburgh in August - festival time more crowed than an AYCE during the hiker bubble). Sister there took us to Mull, Iona, and a side trip to Staffa. (Insert obligatory distillery tour and tasting). The Highlands are amazing. Found out about the West Highland Way - only 96 miles. It looks to be doable in 10 days or less. I'm getting the itch to hike in Scotland, though this year would be out,…

Trying for a do-over of an aborted hike last year. My sister and I planned on a 4-5 day on the Ice Age Trail last June. She wanted to introduce her daughter to backpacking. We looked at a section of the AT but since sister lived in FL, me in WV, and niece in Chicago, we decided on a section of the IAT not far from Milwaukee. Added bonus, no mountains. Hills, yes but nothing like the AT or WV. Long story shorter, I came down with some mosquito-borne, viral bug from a visit to the Florida Keys (Bo…

I retired when I got fed up with my job - Medical School Library Director. It was "fun" for about the first 38 of 41 years. Years of enforced savings AKA retirement through TIAA put away a fair bank roll. That and SS turned out ok. However, wife says "you'll have to find something to do." I realized that. (She didn't want me home 24/7.) I couldn't take off for long periods hiking or whatever as she's some medical problems which prohibit any long-term trips. A week or so a few times a year works …
