Funny side note to today's question. Apparently we have no idea what the tribe we claim to get the name "Appalachian" from was actually called. IIRC the account I read, the name only survived in a single document written in Spanish and was most likely provided by a different tribe long after the actual "Appalachian" tribe had died out. Being a translation of another dated translation and it's entirely likely is sounds bears little resemblance to the name the original would have called themselves…

Haha! We were on extension ladders and didn't notice the difference. Only heard about it from the homeowner who ran outside freaked out.

  • Quote from LIhikers: “I just read that there places declaring a state of emergency because of the eclipse...really people, what's up with that ? ” It makes perfect sense if you think about it, there are small out-of-the-way towns that are about to be inundated with more tourists in the towns but actual residents. Their roads, infrastructure, and stores simply aren't prepared for that kind of influx.

  • Quote from max.patch: “Apparently it's trendy to get married during the eclipse. As a believer in Murphy's Law... ” Does that mean they only have to remember their anniversary during future eclipse years?

Quote from rhjanes: “I missed it. Don't think I've seen it either. I looked at my AT Guide but must have misread it as I came up with "Northern Shenandoah", so picked HF/WV. I then looked at Pen Mar Park and the current AT Guide shows it at mile 1067 on a NOBO. ” Same here. My first thought was "How old is that sign that it's 137 miles off?!"

There is an interesting post on whiteblaze that I thought I'd bring up here. Several posters over a long span of time have reported that the local park office in Greyson Highlands has told them Wise Shelter is for thru hikers only. I haven't hiked that section yet, however after spending more time than I should have searching the internet, I not found any reference to such a rule rule on the Virginia DCR page, the ATC website, or in the ALDHA thru hikers companion. Have any of you heard anything…
