I want to hike from NY City to my son's place in Ohio. The route would be the Long Path north into the Catskills where I'd pick-up the Finger Lakes Trail. Then it would be westbound across NY state to where the North Country Trail cuts down into PA. Then across the northwest corner of PA on the NCT to the Buckeye Trail in Ohio. From the…

Quote from Blacksmith: “Getting to learn this site and reading around a bit. Didn't quite know where to put this so I guess "General" is the right place for this post. Finger lakes trail? where abouts in the finger lakes? When I stayed up in Watkins glen for my birthday this past year we walked on what I was told was the finger lakes trail. Knocked out 5 miles. which I apparently thought was 2 miles lol. Whoops. Then turned around and headed straight for this gelato place around the corner from …

  • Since I am located I western ny it would be at least an 8hr drive. Buffalo area. I priced flight or train to each and they wind up being the same cost. but good point maybe I shouldn't be so hard on myself. My folks always taught me to plan for the worst. And honestly they don't want me to do the trail at all. But the time is right and I want this more than anything. Ill check with hiker hostel about changing my reservation date, thanks

  • Oh I have nada upper body strength lol. my muscle is in my legs. Just the way I'm built I guess. and I felt it in my feet if anything I've found if my pack is properly sized and balanced I can carry as much as I need to. But I definately move slower that's for sure. I am in no way built lol. Perhaps there's a six pack hiding somewhere under my keg. I've got another 50lbs to go before I'm happy. Lol

And help me with my integration of a healthier life style. Quit smoking already and have dropped 55lbs thus far” Start at Springer and go north. Your …

  • Quote from Rasty: “If I was just doing a single overnight near JBL I would only have the barest essentials. Sleeping bag, pad, clothing, rain gear, water bottles, first aid kit (4 bandaids), no cook food. The wolfjaws trail is a bit tougher then the Marcy trip so going real light would have it's advantages.” I Should have taken the hint it's titled wolf jaw lol. Sounds mildly painful. Ok I'll look into leaving gear at the Loj then. Lighter would be better. We are hammock camping. I think I could…

I have an at guide book from last year. That I have used for most of my planning back when I was going to thru-hike, have a collection of maps and a Guide from a friend of a friend who's hiked many times, tons of side notes he added. I just haven't looked at them since a few days ago deciding on splitting the trail in half. Thanks ill bookmark it.

  • But my legs have been solid since I had started hiking a few years ago. I would prefer to take my pack with me as I take any opportunity I can to wear it. But when I did Marcy and phelps I took my pack off and left it when we ascended the peaks moved off trail and came back for it when we looped back. it's tricky when you have an overweight pack (60lbs) and headed down rock face lol

  • Marcy and phelps were my sprained ankle trip lol, that was fun.

  • No I haven't I am not familiar with jbl circuit. I have hiked Marcy and phelps in one trip, and cascade and porter on a day hike. And Algonquin peak as a day hike. While camping in the Loj.

you're right idk why I couldn't find the correct mileage earlier for some reason I felt like it was more like 300 miles. yea I would need to either hike 24 miles a day with no zero or leave no later than the 9th of April. And I'm not too sure weather would be decent then. Hmm I wonder if starting in may and scraping trail days might be a better option. Yes easier to get into the trail but I'd have super muggy days in Georgia wouldn't I? What is your recommendation for a 3 month section? I plan o…

I am taking heed to advice and finances forced me into holding off a bit longer than planned. Will have 3-4months of time instead of 6. recommendations for a section hike? I would love to hike from harpers ferry to springer. but how would the weather be if I left late April? When would I have to leave to make pace for damascus trail days. (One stop I don't wanna miss) I can do a 10mile day on incline and bouldering in adirondacks, how much faster would snp pass by compared to Georgia?
