  • Quote from TrafficJam: “Quote from hikerboy: “im not planning any zeros, but then again, im 58 yrs old, and you never know. id love to stay at tapoco lodge, but its only a day from fontana, and i need to resupply before the smokies, and i'll need 5-6 days food from fontana to davenport gap, as i dont want to stop in cherokee again. i may just stay the night anyway” How difficult is it to get into Bryson City from the tunnel to resupply? I've never been past Fontana.” My general observation is it…

  • I doubt they will catch you either unless you take a zero somewhere.

  • Quote from hikerboy: “i start 4/6. which apparently would be june 4th in oz” I know two hikers leaving a day behind you.

  • Thanks brother, this is pretty cool.

  • Quote from Da Wolf: “the ATC should STOP recognizing folks for walkin' the trail. no patches or certificates or gettin' your pic taken at the HQ” I agree with you. I told the BMTA a few years back that it was one of the biggest mistakes the ATC ever did and we should not go down that path either. They didn't listen to me either LOL.

  • Spacing for paragraphs is a little off LOL.

  • All of these are valid points. Let me give you some history of this and where we are. In 1979 GATC members start working on an alternate route for the AT because they saw the AT getting too crowded. The initial idea was it would be a more remote wilderness trail and I got the idea that it was supposed to be without any shelters. In 1980 the BMTA was formed mostly from GATC members and one of the early members is now the director of the ATC. The original concept was to get hikers to the Smokies a…

  • I know Max thinks he has a point, apparently he missed all those meeting we had with the Park Service when they were implementing this and trying to get our trail the same permit system the AT has.

  • Quote from max.patch: “in my opinion, the bmt should tell the at to pound sand and devote all their energies to getting the gsmnp to expand the existing permit system to include the bmt.” I can send you a BMTA membership application and you can start helping us with that.

  • Well I am too. I don't think overcrowding will happen for various reasons and blazing is just one of the points I am trying to make as to why. Look at it from this perspective. The ATC is estimating by 2017 they will have 5,000-6,000 thru-hike starters. Most of them (say 75%) of them are going to leave between March 1 and May 15, 75 days. So they think that means 3,750-4,500 spaced out over 75 days, that is 50-60 people a day leaving Springer in a bubble to start going north. If we got 5% (which…

  • Howdy, I'm with Sly actually. I think the entire AT should be set up on a corridor style hike and actually it is for whoever doesn't care about being pure or getting a patch, but that is another conversation. First off we have stated emphatically that the BMT is not going to be an AT clone. We have been talking about this for years, the reason the BMT was even started is because in 1979 some GATC members thought the AT was getting too crowded LOL. We've been saying (and continue to say) that if …

  • Quote from Dmax: “Is Fontana Dam open to foot traffic now?” I didn't know it was closed.

  • Quote from Rasty: “Quote from SGT Rock: “I do like that one of Rasty before the tunnel to nowhere. So far that is the best of the ones I've seen. The other violates my own informal rule to not use myself in any cover. It creates funny moments when people have seen one of the previous covers and either think I am supposed to look like Tipi Walter or Mags. What I would really like is to have a photo of a hiker on one of the new sections highlights.” That is Hikerboy in that picture” My bad. I was …

  • On to other news. With all the recent changes to the BMT, I need to start editing the BMT Thru-Hikers guide for an earlier than normal update. That said, I need a new cover photo. If you have a good BMT trail photo with hiker(s) in it, please send it to me so I have some to pick from.thanks.

  • Quote from Rasty: “Quote from WiseOldOwl: “So what happens to the old trail?” I think they sell it on the used market.” I think it is going up on e-bay. But seriously, it is going to be an "approve alternate route" to the BMT. The trail signs will still be there.

  • This are a lot of nice spots along this section to experience. My main problem is I want to go slow through here and enjoy it.

  • For those that are interested I've attached a copy of the errata page to this post. 165.8 At Cold Spring Gap take trail #54A to Bob Bald. 168.3 At Stratton Bald join trail #53 to Haoe Bald. • Sorry I haven't been around here in a while. I've been drinking... Quote: “ Reroute News or"Mabel, them North Carolina folks are at it agin!" By Dick Evans The route for any trail is a much more complex thing to determine than most folks would guess. While it is easy to draw a line on a map and say, "Let's put a Trail here," the reality is much different. Land ownership and usage issues, access, topography and other factors combine to make seemingly simple issues quite complex, involving at time…

  • Postholer has updated the online BMT map: postholer.com/gmap/gmap.php?trail_id=14 It is very useful for hikers durring the planning phase. Soon the download map pack should also be updated.
