  • Inchworm's remains found in Maine

I really find it hard to believe that all the searchers and canine teams didn't find any trace of her in two years. The number of AT hikers alone who spent time analyzing maps and her last known location, and many of them taking time and effort to look for her, leaves me to believe she wasn't in the final location when that area was searched and re-searched. I don't understand what could have happened or how, but I don't believe she got lost or disoriented. The only thing that would convince me …

I swore the whole time out there that I was never going to hike again. At the end of the trip, I told the girls that this was our first annual 3 generation backpacking trip. The trail never lets you go.

Quote from jimmyjam: “we have seen a lot of women out hiking- weekenders, sectioners, and thrus- I would say close to 40%. We have seen 3 women in their 70s who are doing 500+ mile sections- they are amazing. ” I'm pretty old and spent 3 days last week on the AT in NY with my daughter and granddaughter - damn near killed myself! (I haven't backpacked since about 1999, but in pretty good condition for my age.) I kept stumbling on all the rocks and boulders and look like I fought with a bear!

Having lived in Ireland for 3 yrs I was embarrassed at how many American visitors kept saying "back home we do it this way"; it really irritated the locals although they didn't show it. I'm a female and was told to never ever ask anyone for a "ride", so be prepared to make mistakes and laugh at yourself along with the locals. I found that the Irish ask a lot of point blank questions, including your views on politics, the President, etc. I tried to never express views that were anti-American. I f…

  • I did some research and found that Jackie McDonnell is known as Yogi, and I believe she publishes a guide together with Matt Signore. How did I ever confuse the two?

Quote from Grinder: “Any word or phrase that came into being via hip-hop culture. "Ima" "Finna" I could go on but I'm making myself sick already with just those two.” JuJ Just don't take away the California word "hella". It's a great word: "This has been a hella steep hill"; or "Trail food tastes hella good (or hella bad)"; or "Grinder is a hella nice guy!"

  • I'm a little confused. Is AWOL's book written by the same person who does AWOL's Guides? The AWOL I know of is on the PCT-L (mailing list), and writes her own guides to the PCT, CDT, AT, etc. I believe her name is Jackie O'Connell, but not sure of the last name?

It was like eating an Oreo, but not as sweet. Delicious!” black and tan is half guiness and half bass ale but i prefer my guiness straight. other variations include guiness and harp and guiness and hard cider.” Just don't ask for a Black and Tan if you are in Ireland. (It's referred to as a Half & Half in the Republic of Ireland.)

L Dog wrote: You don't need purification drops and a filter on the AT. Just bring the filter. My filter crapped out before I got out of Georgia due to the high silt content of the water. Luckily I had brought iodine tabs & neutralizer (a pinch of Vit. C will neutralize the iodine color, taste, and smell of treated water - after allowing sufficient time for the iodine to purify the water.) I would always take a 2nd form of water purification because it is so important, and iodine works very well.…

I cringe when I hear people saying things like "so unique", "more unique", etc. Unique cannot be qualified, it's just unique.

  • Quote from July: “Not only does Wired have a streamlined gear set, her daily posts from the trail are pretty cool. I hate when following a blog, the hiker 'disappears' dosent post for 2-3-4 weeks. It's like, hey, what happened last WEEK? :)” I like reading up-to-date hiker journals, but I also like the hiker who is more focused on enjoying the hike than in publishing journals & photos every day..

  • I don't have the slightest clue if I can remove the battery or not - never had any reason to. I dont see anything on the phone that looks like it opens up to a battery compartment, although I know there has to be one. I don't want to mess with it because I didn't buy the insurance on the phone so if I ruin it I'll have to buy a new one. Someone told me recently that I should take the phone when I'm backpacking because even if I can't get a signal, I can be located via the phone signal. Do you kn…

I didn't read that it was bad, but it seems to me to involve more work than I'm looking to do to get water. I am going to definitely take a good look at them next time I'm at REI.

That sounds pretty good to me, although I'll have to translate it to where I hike in CA. I'll have to find an easy to use filter though.

I've just read all the posts on the 3 previous topics in this category, and decided to start my own. I was thinking the Sawyer sounded pretty good until I read that topic. Maybe I'm just getting to be a cranky impatient old lady, but I can tell you I won't bother with all the things you have to do to get good water from one of those things. On my thru hike attempt in 1997 my OR filter broke and I used iodine tabs that I had brought along with me. When you use the neutralizer (Vit. C) in the trea…
