odd man out is right, have noticed the same observation in that some folks obsess about their gear but never seem to use it in the real world. For example, you can build (or buy) a very hot alcohol stove, but in the real world, you really want one to have an internal wick and burn a little slowly for 15 minutes. It makes a better rice dish that way...although most of the time I am just boiling water since I am a light weight backpacker. I have actually discovered that it is the pot and the pot s…

Didn't' qualify but not a fan of filling landfills with empty fuel canisters just to purchase a one person cooking system. I have also read on the internet about what happens if the little o-ring seal fails while you are cooking. It is a rare occurrence, but the results could be fatal should it fail while the stove is in operation. You can not determine how long the canisters have been stored when you purchase one. The sealing o-ring could be brand new or it could be ten years old and have a cra…

WanderingStovie, have found that the stove almost does not matter if it throws enough BTU's to do what you need to do, it is how you trap that heat (with a windscreen and/or heat exchanger pot) that counts. It is how you use the heat that the stove throws and how effective the stove is at throwing that heat. Wick stoves tend to throw it slower and longer. If you have a great system to trap the heat and use it, then the stove is secondary.

Have you tried a MSR igniter or a Optimus Sparky to light your alcohol stove? The best approach is to dip it and then withdraw it about six inches while holding it down. Click, then light your stove. Be sure and blow it out before you return it to your pocket. It works every time even if you drop it in the river. All it takes is a shake off and it works every time.

Being a land owner in the mountains and having people come steal your ginseng in the middle of the night is not fun. Yes, it is worth a lot of money. Some people do not think anything of stealing what is not rightfully theirs. Please be careful where you pick. It could be dangerous to one's heath.

WanderingStovie, my DIY stoves were all the double wall side or top burner type and worked great. I nearly always would get a rip as I placed the bottom onto the stove because I had stretched the aluminum too thin before assembling it. The stove would look great once polished but leak after several uses because I used the wrong glue. My glue would eventually burn off and then the stove would leak at the crack in the bottom. I really enjoyed making them and testing them on my back deck, but going…

BirdBrain, age is just a number, but mine has a lot of digits in it. Dedicated Hanger refers to my membership in the Hammock Form as a dedicated member of society that believes that taking a nap in a hammock every day is a moral imperative. It is a must do. I do not sell stoves, (or any other camping equipment), I just buy them and test them out for my own use. Over the years I believe I have purchased and used more than 40 stoves. I have used every white gas stove known to man. My current favor…

Just a short note to introduce myself, I am an older guy from Georgia who has been hiking mostly here in the Southeast for years. My favorites are the Chattooga River, Joyce Kilmer/Slickrock Wilderness Citco Creek Wilderness, and the Shining Rock Wilderness. Switched from tent camping to light weight hammock camping about a year ago. Really enjoy my hammock camping and the challenges associated with staying warm and dry while getting a good night's sleep in the woods. Have gone a little off the …

BirdBrain, thank you for the link. I enjoyed reading as much as I could about the problem and how others experienced it. As I think more and more about the two incidents of flare up, I think it has to be caused by heat entrapment in the base. Of the ten alcohol stoves I own and use, the Trangia is the only one that suffers this problem. The others get warm but not hot enough to boil the fuel. I did not fill the stove more than half full. It seemed that anything longer than 10 minutes with a larg…

Just got back from a week long trip to NC and found out from personal experience that trapped heat under a large pot can make build up enough heat for a fuel boil over incident. Was not smart enough to figure it out the first time and had to experience it the second time to realize that a large pan on top of my Trangia for over ten minutes was creating a fuel boil over danger. Understand now why a tight windscreen over a large pot is just inviting dangerous heat build up. No one was hurt in both…
