2017 - Hiking Plans.
PostPlanning a 3 day hike the week of July 4 to start from GA Neel's Gap and end at Dick's Creek. Total mileage is about 37 miles. Plan on doing 14/14/9. There is a stream at each of the anticipated camps but seeing mixed reviews concerning water availability. Anyone have a reliable report for water 14 and 28 miles N of Neel's Gap? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Gonna be in the Smokies over Thanksgiving and hoping to do ~30 miles of the AT while there. Trying to determine my best option? Looking to do 12+ miles day 1 & 2 with remaining mileage day 3. Option 1 - Fontana to Clingmans (or other direction) risk it will snow/ice and cannot get picked up or dropped off. Option 2 - Fontana to Nantahala OC (or other direction) - risks? Any advice is appreciated. Where to stay, etc. Thank you in advance for the help.

Packing your fears
PostInteresting perspective? Never really thought about it but there is truth to it. Not 100% of my gear is fear related but a lot of it is. Fear of Hypothermia, dehydration and hunger do play into what and how much I bring. Anyone who tells you otherwise should attempt their hike without. If I know or suspect very low water availability I pack more water...duh! But isn't this true in all situations. Survival is key and we do on a daily basis what it takes to make it through the situation at hand.

Jumping on AT July 5
PostFolks I completed my first 31+ miles of the AT on July 7. Started at the Springer parking lot at USFS 42. Hiked 14.5 miles day 1 and spent the night at Justus Creek. Absolutely beautiful! I did not feel in jeopardy of being short water this 1st day, in fact I over carried. Got rained on for an hour or so but then it let up and I dried out. Day 2 I left Justus for Lance Creek. There was less water in this 10 miles. I still overcarried. Spent the night at Lance Creek. Tent pads are small but adequ…

Jumping on AT July 5
PostI will be making my first AT leg on July 5th. Can't really call it a section, only doing 31 miles over 3 days. Really interested in the water situation. Anyone have an update on water holes between springer and Neil's gap?
