Packable guns
AdventureMyk - - General
PostThe only thing I don't like about a lot of the S&W semi-auto's is the way they have the barrel far too high on the frame. That extra bit of leverage against your hand and the mass of the slide really pulls you away from target and kills recovery time. Not to mention it just makes for a tall pistol that seems to have the same issue that I can't stand with glocks: with all the weight up top it feels like the balance changes every shot. That's a personal issue though. Dmax, basic suggestion is to f…

PostI have less than no problem with someone carrying a weapon legally in a park. You never know when it might be used as anything from self defense to a signalling device (three shots a second apart straight up is still a call for help in most places). I'm not a fan of Glock but they do make a smaller 9mm in a pretty much universe-proof polymer. Otherwise I'd tend to stick with a polymer gun for lighter weight and weather resistance if I were to use it as a hiking/kayak-camping security piece. I ru…

Quote from SarcasmTheElf: “ Ever try scooping up one fire ant mound with a shove, running across the yard and then dumping it on another fire ant mound? It results in a near instant epic ant battle as each nest tries to fight off the sudden "invaders".” No, I missed that one but when I lived in Gainesville, Fla I had the misfortune of trying to teach myself to wheelie a YZ-250 motocross bike through the gears and ended up clutching a bit too rough. Result? Slid into a rather nasty cactus. So I'm…

Quote from OzJacko: “Pour it into mouse holes and light it.... :)” Why did I just picture Mrs. Brisby and Auntie Shrew racing around with their fur on fire yelling for help from the rats? (On the other hand, setting gas in a pan next to fire-ant mounds and letting the vapors settle before igniting them usually had a nice 'fwump' sound followed by around 30-40 smoking spots in the yard... and a lot less ants...)

For what it's worth a pair of friends used the Spot's when they were in dirt bike wrecks (obviously not on the AT, one was in Colorado, the other in Royal Blue on the TN/Ky border area). Both triggered them and after waiting for hours both managed to crawl out and find help. No one even so much as went to look for them. Chalk it up to money wasted and time that could have made a difference of surviving or not. Having a decent plan in place and reasonable gear/skills will be a far more effective …

So I sold my pool table this weekend since I haven't used it in.. uhmm. Well, I forgot! Guess it's been a while. Then it dawned one me I haven't been camping in 2 weeks and withdrawals are settling in. What's a person to do? Let's see, Hammock, check. Chairs? Check. Sleeping pad? Check. Tent? Got it.. Oohh.. Campfire? Yes! (So I'm either a big kid or a total idiot, probably more the latter, but at least it's fun.) 04_zpsiuo5rlcp.jpg 03_zpsqto8bfu5.jpg 02_zpsfeqqilts.jpg 01_zpsusytjikb.jpg

I will say we keep things like the med-kit where we can grab it out of the front fast if we need it. I wonder if we frankly forget that the front opens or it's just the way we load them. If it's going to rain we also wrap the inside of the bag with a trash compactor bag so that rules out the front use anyhow. Great feature if you remember it has it. (also the Osprey's and I think the Gregory's have compression straps that go across the front so even if the zipper failed for some reason your gear…

backcountry sale

PostLooks like a pretty solid deal. As much as I spin like an electric motor overnight that's something I might look into at some point.

Quote from Dan76: “Status?” That was back on Jan 3rd. Last night (Jan 17th) we did an overnight at Lake Santeetlah in North Carolina. Crystal clear skies, no ambient light, galaxies were clear and several sharp looking meteors streaking across the skies. Nice night. This is the link to the Davenport Hike (pic heavy) Jan 3rd & 4th, Overnight at Davenport Gap Shelter on the Appalachian Trail

I hiked Lakeshore Trail from Fonanna Dam to a camping spot in the valley, then hung a left and did the vertical hike straight up to Shuckstack Tower. The Lakeshore part was fun! lots of old cars and stuff to play around in that were abandoned after they flooded out the roads, etc. The climb to shuckstack? Not so much... We learned after the fact that it's probably the singularly most strenuous and BORING climb along the entire appalachian run. Starts going up, then increases exponentially like a…

Water questions

PostIn my case it was having 2 water supplies along the way that weren't working coupled with the entire return stretch running along the top of a ridge-line. This was before I had any water filtering, etc. so we had to carry all the water with us. Between cooking and such we simply misjudged what we were going to need. It was my fault entirely for counting on the resources to be available and planning my trip around it. I'm usually the 'be prepared for the unexpected' but that was also our first ba…

Basic sleep systems
PostI have one of the thermo-liners (midlevel) and use it with my WM 20degree bag when hammock camping. I just picked up a new way to insulate the bottom against wind/CBS so I might not need them anymore. Every time I get out of my sleeping bag I turn them inside out and hang them to air out in the breeze while I pack the site unless it's pouring rain.

Water questions

PostI ran out once on a July hike back down from Shuckstack. It was pretty miserable when we had already been rationing it too much. My first backpacking trip was fraught with disasters, that was one of them.

PostI actually just made a post about this in another forum so I'll copy it here. I run a 3 liter Osprey hydration in the Osprey pack. Backing that is a 4 liter Platypus Gravity Works filtration system (added the charcoal canister but frankly don't think I need it in East TN) that stays rolled up in the pack. If I'm going to hit a dry stretch I can run a few liters from the platypus to fill my hydration, then run another batch to fill it. That gives me 7 liters of fresh water that's better than anyt…
