TOPO Ultraventure
Traffic Jam - - Footwear
PostI’ll ask my son about the TOPO, see what he thinks. He’s a shoe expert. Is your question about the fad referring to the Hoka’s? Hokas are great and the majority of nurses that I work with wear them. They are very comfortable and supportive.

Quote from StalkingTortoise: “You can turn off those "time to move" reminders. Google will reveal the steps since I can't remember how. I always thought they were funny when they went off while in a plane or driving. ” After exceeding my step goal x3 at work, I got home and was resting in my chair when my watch told me it’s time to move…no thanks! I’ll change the settings at some point. I’d rather have a reminder to hydrate as drinking enough water is a struggle for me.

Took a walk today

PostI had a nice Mother’s Day hike in Chickamauga Battlefield followed by two nights in a cabin (with hot tub) with my mom and sister. The rocks have faces. To me, they look like an Egyptian Sphinx, a witch Dr., and Herman Munster. The house is called Craven’s House and has an interesting history. The original house was destroyed during the Battle Above the Clouds but was rebuilt. I meant to hike a different trail but couldn’t find a parking space nearby so had to wing it.

Hiking & Biking
Traffic Jam - - General
PostI’ve been riding and trying to get my butt used to being in the saddle again. Since cancelling my gym membership and not going to winter spin class, it’s harder to stay in cycling shape during the off season. I’ve considered investing in winter cycling gear but as I get older, the cold just isn’t fun. In a few weeks, I’m going on a bike packing trip on the Greenbrier Trail in WV and can’t wait. And I’m thinking about the C&O Canal in July but it depends on my work schedule.

For my birthday, I gifted myself a new sports watch, a Garmin Venu 3S. I really loved my Suunto but got my money’s worth out of it and was tired of using an HRM strap. I love my new watch, it’s easy to use and isn’t as big and clunky as the previous one. It’s cool to see my sleep evaluation (my sleep sucks, lol) and funny/annoying to get “Its time to move” reminders. I also recently upgraded to an iPhone 15 so I’m seriously considering cancelling my Inreach plan and relying only on my watch and …

welcome to the cafe
PostQuote from IMScotty: “Sure has been quiet in here this week. I hope that means you are all out there hiking! ” I got out to hike, we’ve had beautiful weather. My international sock knitting competition has started so I’m focused on that, made it through qualifications and round 1. Trying to plan a backpacking trip between rounds 2 and 3 but the timing may be too tight. Also busy fiddle playing…I have a new teacher for private lessons but he’s expensive so it’s only twice a month plus a weekly 2 …

PostI recently found some good, fleece-lined leggings on clearance for < $30…win! I’m very happy to find such a deal, especially since I was seriously considering Lululemon leggings (but only because I own stock in the company. They are very warm so will be good for the cold days but the extra thickness make them less flexible. Can’t wait to try them out but I’m not wishing for more cold weather.

Daypack
Traffic Jam - - Packs
PostMy go lite Rush 14l is on its last legs and should have been replaced two years ago. That day pack has been well used and well loved but it’s time to go. The buckle is broken, the zipper pulls are torn off so are now pieces of yarn, the fabric is flaking in places, and it’s stained and disreputable looking. My problem is that I can’t find anything that I like as much as that pack. Every time I look, I get frustrated so won’t make a decision. Last month I finally decided to bite the bullet and fi…

PostIt was a tough choice this morning, go hiking and enjoy a sunny, 65* day or stay home and finish my Fair Isle sweater. (I had to buy one more skein of yarn and it was Out for Delivery.) Life is tough sometimes. Hiking won. I only took 1 pic, trying to capture a steep drop-off but as usual my photography skills suck. Had a great time despite the usual relentless climbing then turning around and having to descend. It was a gorgeous day.

I feel that the sacredness of special places is inside of us and is always very personal, not an itinerary of places to visit. We make a place magical by how we experience it. For me, there’s a particular place where I rested, soaked in the environment, grieved for my sister, and felt very close to her. That’s my sacred place.

Knead Bread
PostRecent work stress (life and death situations) has impacted my mental health so I’ve been baking for stress relief. I’ve been working hard to get my sourdough starter the healthiest it can be by balancing the homofermentative and heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria and baking bread nearly every day to perfect technique and it’s paying off. This morning’s bread finally has the bloom that has been missing for a while. I’m so happy! I’m also finishing up pizza dough that’s been fermenting in th…

PostTemps were mid 30’s with a slight breeze on my walk yesterday. I wore a lightweight LS tech shirt, a light, down vest, a fleece pullover as my outer and basic leggings (and hat and gloves). Despite exerting myself on the hills, my arms and legs were cold. I thought the vest would warm my core and the warmth would spread to my limbs but it didn’t work. A heavier, midweight LS shirt with merino or other warm fiber would have been better and another layer on my legs. I’m still looking at fleece lin…

PostQuote from Traffic Jam: “I’m currently at 100% correct (had to clear my history recently) But I’m afraid to answer today’s question, The word “in” is confusing. ” got it, I guess “in” or “along” really doesn’t matter.

PostWe’ve all hiked enough and should have our cool/cold weather clothing system figured out but this is the time of year that I evaluate what I’m wearing and think about what’s working and what isn’t. I’ve only added one item in the past few years…a pair of merino wool glove liners, but like to hear about new stuff on the market. One fabric I’ve read about is alpha direct fleece, a polartec fleece that supposedly keeps you warm while active but is terrible in the wind. A particular problem of mine …
