Took a walk today
odd man out - - General
PostTook a walk (about a mile total out and back) through a lovely nature preserve along the Gardon gorge. Most noteworthy is it took us under the largest Roman aqueduct. Now a. Now there's something you don't see every day! Now nearly 2000 years old. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16642/

Hiking plan for 2024
PostQuote from StalkingTortoise: “Heading out this weekend to walk steps at a local park in preparation for my early July hike in the Alps.... ” Are you still going to see the Palio in Siena? I'm so jealous. We had lunch at a Café on the Campo. Siena is a beautiful town. We are off the Povence next week, but not for hiking.

PostQuote from rhjanes: “It's when it has rained for 8 days and nights, your feet are water logged, you ran out of food, your girlfriend ran off with your best friend, took the dog and your truck done got repossessed. ” That there is funny. I'm thinking "Comic" for a trail name.

PostWe were on our walk today at MacGregor Point Provincial Park today. I was using my phone to ID bird songs with the Merlin App when a Black Capped Chickadee landed on my phone. Scared the crap out of me. The bird and I both survived.

PostDid a two mile walk through MacGregor Point Provincial Park, Ontario. It was supposed to be for bird watching (it's migration season and a big birding festival was going on) but we saw few birds. There were lots of nice wildflowers (lady slipper, columbine, pitcher plant fen). The lake is always pretty. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16618/appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16619/appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16621/appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Atta…

Hiking plan for 2024
PostQuote from hikerboy: “Have them shuttle you to Jo-Mary Rd. ” there are two trailheads in that area. I don't recall the name of the other but it's a little further south. That is also a possibility. I was trying to decide how many miles per day to plan on for that section. I have 5 days to get to KSC. On paper, that section looks easy (i.e. not much elevation change).

you can reserve 4 months out. On line you only see one week at a time. Click the date at the top of the reservation screen to get a calendar. Select the date you want to see. Also select the campground you want. Scroll down to see availability.. If you go too far out you see an icon that says those dates not yet reservable. In this screenshot I set it to search starting Sep 15 at KSC. It is showing site 1 is not available on the 15th, available on the 16th, but not reservable on the 17th as that…

PostI started drinking BT few years ago before it got hip and trendy. There was a whole pile of it by the check out line. It was in my price range so I tried it. Right after that it became hard to find. I did find a bottle recently, along with a bottle of Sazarac.

PostSo what's "really special"? My son-in-law, who is a bourbon fanatic recommends Weller. I've never seen it in the liquor stores so I'm guessing they hide it from us "ordinary people".

PostAccording to the most recent survey of AT long distance hikers by The Trek thetrek.co/appalachian-trail/t…l-2023-thru-hiker-survey/ Altra is the most popular brand by a wide margin, with as many users as the next three brands combined (#2=Hoka, #3=Topo, #4=Brooks). I had Altras, but didn't like them due to lack of lateral stability. When replacing them I tried on Hoka but didn't like the thick soles. I want to be able to feel the trail. I have been using Brooks for a few years. But I also use my…

I like my Mini (V1). My last 2 hikes were in locations where I didn't need a phone (no service, maps adequate, I have a mirrorless camera) so the Garmin was my only communication. It can be paired with a phone app to make the interface more user friendly, but I have never bothered as I have not used it for chatting. It's mostly for emergencies or routine check in. I also don't use it for tracking, so battery life has been fine for 5 day trips I've done.

Quote from Sonder: “Hello Folks new boot here, but not new to hiking. Well I will find myself for three days in the Baxter area. I will be solo and my prime objective is digital photography and fly fishing. If mother nature starts to act like a reluctant toddler weather wise I was thinking about a hike on the fabled AT. This will be a short hike only 3-7 miles. If I can get my friend to join me I would be up for a 9 mile hike. With those parameters what are your fave stretches being onky 3 - 9 m…
