PostQuote from StalkingTortoise: “... There's something to be said for being able to walk or bicycle around town or instead of having to drive everywhere. ” The Dutch hsve strict zoning laws to prevent sprawling development which is a primary reason for the US's dependence on cars. I recall driving through the Netherlands, you would see farms until you get to a town or city. Inside the city limits, the houses are packed very close together. Outside that line, there is no development at all. We drove…

PostWe went to a minor leage ball game on Friday - our single A Tigers affiliate vs Dayton. It was a group outing hosted by our university. So we had a private deck for the group right on the left field fence. In the 3rd inning, one of the home players hit a home run ball commig right at me. I stand, follow it as it comes in, but sails just a few feet over me and was caught bare handed by the guy behind me. It's the closest I've ever come to catching a HR ball. Many years ago, in the same ball park,…

PostI have often wondered why when there is some natural disaster they spend millions od dollars to airlift or truck in tons and tons of bottled water when they could for a fraction of the cost hand out water filters.

PostOur power went out this evening. The utility company's web site days it's a small local outage that should be fixed by midnight. But my wife asks "How will I boil water to make tea tonight?" I ask "Seriously? You don't recall I have spent the last 10 years making homemade alcohol stoves?" Next it will be the 0.1 Micron filter for the water boil advisory.

PostQuote from StalkingTortoise: “Heading out this weekend to walk steps at a local park in preparation for my early July hike in the Alps.... ” Are you still going to see the Palio in Siena? I'm so jealous. We had lunch at a Café on the Campo. Siena is a beautiful town. We are off the Povence next week, but not for hiking.

PostWe were on our walk today at MacGregor Point Provincial Park today. I was using my phone to ID bird songs with the Merlin App when a Black Capped Chickadee landed on my phone. Scared the crap out of me. The bird and I both survived.

PostDid a two mile walk through MacGregor Point Provincial Park, Ontario. It was supposed to be for bird watching (it's migration season and a big birding festival was going on) but we saw few birds. There were lots of nice wildflowers (lady slipper, columbine, pitcher plant fen). The lake is always pretty. appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16618/appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16619/appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Attachment/16621/appalachiantrailcafe.net/index.php/Atta…

PostQuote from hikerboy: “Have them shuttle you to Jo-Mary Rd. ” there are two trailheads in that area. I don't recall the name of the other but it's a little further south. That is also a possibility. I was trying to decide how many miles per day to plan on for that section. I have 5 days to get to KSC. On paper, that section looks easy (i.e. not much elevation change).
