my favorite quote was from an Irish boss" Us Irish are known for two things. Drinking & fighting! We tend to do them together & neither of them end up well."

Here's some more pics of the hike. You can see my modified Trailstar. The field pictures are from Hog Camp Gap, a real nice camping spot with a spring. The good view shots are on top of Spy Rock which is on a short spur trail from the AT near the Priest.…

Bennington > Killington VT is another great moderate sections with plenty of alpine ponds & views. Also easy & cheap public transport for a section hike.

North from Damascus will put you through Mt Rodgers & Grayson Highlandlands with the wild ponies. Another great streach is Pearisburg northbound. You would hit the VA Tripple Crown; Dragons Tooth, MaCafee Knob & Tinkers Cliff.

We are planning an approx 90 mile hike in late Aug or Sept and looking for some thoughts on a great section to hike. Moderate fitness level just don't have a lot of mountains to hike in Iowa. Prefer not too far south or North for driving reasons. Last…

The U.S. Armed Forces Survival Manual. Currently on the map and compass chapter. I seem to mumble “WTF” under my breath a lot...I’ll never understand this.

The night before my hiking buddies were to arrive, my juniper allergy decided to go into high gear. I didn't want to cancel because I was really looking forward to it and we had been weeks in planning it. So I decided if I felt bad in the morning I'd go along anyway for the first night so that I could shuttle them to the other trail head the following morning.
Slingshot and Craig arrived at my house about 3pm and I told them of my sinus situation and what my plan was. So we headed west in both trucks. Our first destination was Sheetz at Zion Crossroads for sandwiches for dinner. Next on to Crabtree Falls Meadows. The Meadows is just above the top of the falls about 2 miles down a narrow 4 wheel drive road. Apparently a big storm had come thru or possibly a tornado as the road was covered in blow downs. The Forest service had cut a path thru barely 8 ft wide, I mean wtf guys would it have been any harder to cut 10 ft? The pictures I took of the road are void of the blow downs. There…

  • Winter Linville Gorge

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
