A short update. Been learning the Subaru way bit by bit, so far i like it. Was gonna shut off all the warning stuff, but decided to let it chirp at me until i figure out what it all means. I'm finding it chirps less and less the better i drive. Method to…

Yesterday was another beautiful spring day and I took the opportunity to ride to work again. It was a good day with only 1 near miss. Someone drove so close to me that I was able to fold their right mirror back. I saw them coming in my little rear view…

This past Saturday I experienced my first REI garage sale.
The store opened at 10 but we didn't get there until a couple of hours later.
The first thing I noticed was that the parking lot was full with people pulling in as fast as people leaving. We got the last available parking spot that was open at that moment. Going inside one of the employees made sure to tell us that all the "good stuff" was long gone. That was OK with me as I really don't need anything. I wandered the store looking at all the marked down items, every kind of thing you can think of. What impressed me most was not the prices, but how worn some of the items looked. There were shoes that had lots of miles on them and the reason for return, as marked on the garage sale tag, was that they weren't comfortable. Another was a pair of gloves marked that they were too small that were torn and worn. The best looking items were winter jackets of every size and style, some looked brand new. But like I said, I don't…
  • New

A few months ago I posted somewhere that I intended to trade my truck in for a Subaru Outback. I still intend to do that, but I've been waiting to see if the 2020 Outback would be a simple refresh or completely new. Well, I now know the answer, it will be new, based on Subaru's new global platform like the 2019 Ascent. Supposed to be more rigid, better handling, yadda, yadda. No doubt, the real reason is it will be cheaper to build. Whatever, I still want an Outback.

So will it be a 2019 or a 2020? Don't know just yet, but here are my thoughts:

2020 will probably be more expensive
2020 will only be offered with 4 cyl engines - a normal and a turbo like the Ascent (260 hp)
2019 will probably be discounted as we get nearer the 2020 delivery date
2019 may suffer some accelerated depreciation because of the redesign
2019 driven, I like it (but only with a 6 cyl) - that may be mitigated because the 2020 will offer a turbo 4cyl with 260 hp (about same as the 2019 6cyl)
    Probably can't even…

  • Winter Linville Gorge

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
