2nd dose mule-kicked my boy for about two hours, around 12 hours after the vaccination. But it's working. I'm trying to talk my wife into coming out of her temporary retirement to be a vaccination nurse. Once more doses are available, she could make a…

I finally got around to trying out the new quilt. I paired this with a wide/long Nemo pad and large Kylmit X pillow. The quilt opened up is 45" at the foot and 54" at the head and about 75 1/2"in length stretched. It was called the "UP Quilt" when I ordered it and now it's called the "Synergy Quilt". This was ordered as a Wide Regular.
It does have a very down like feel to it. It stuffs in a stuff sack at 8"x14" and in the picture I compressed it to 8"x7" and it could be compressed further. There is no zipper on the footbox, just a series of snaps at 4" up to 24" from the bottom. There is a draw cord at the bottom to close the foot and another at the head end to close it around your shoulders and a double snap. There are two shock cords with two adjustable loops to attach the quilt to the pad. The only thing I don't like is that the draw cord at the head end ends up behind your head which makes it a little difficult to close. EE quilts have the cord ends so that they are right at your…

I found this interesting. It's a survey of the number and cause of deaths in all US National Parks (except the newest one) over the last 10 years.

    outforia.com/danger-parks/

The deadliest overall is the Grand Canyon, with by far the most medical (heart attacks trying to hike out?) and lots of environmental (heat stroke?), second to Denali (opposite of heat stroke?).
The most likely way to die is by falling. Yosemite has a big lead here with 45 - enough to get it #2 overall. Way behind in the 20's are GC, SEKI, Zion, and the Tetons.
GSMNP is #3 overall, thanks to lots and lots of fatal car accidents, almost 3X as many as the second in that category, Death Valley (what is there to hit in DV??).
The third most likely way to die is "undetermined". Not sure what that is. I guess sometimes they don't bother asking the dead person what they died of.
SEKI, Yellowstone, Denali, Mt Rainier and RMNP round out the top 8.

BTW, for all of you worried about being killed by wild animals, they…

I wore the jacket around the neighborhood today. It was 45° and the wind was out of the NW at about 20mph. So it felt a lot chiller that it was. I'd say a real feel of more like 30° or less. The jacket does a great job of not letting the wind thru because of the non- sew thru design, elastic cuffs and the below the waist length. I wore a ls cotton pullover and a cotton "wife beater" T under that. I was warm.
The jacket has a nice feel, great fit and nice deep hood. I'm 6' and usually hoover around 160 lbs, so I'm what I would call a slim athletic build. I'm normally a large in most things but I went by the reviews I read and followed the size chart on EEs website and ordered the medium. Perfect with room to layer underneath without being binding. It compacts well as you can see in the picture, if I was to use both hands I could get it smaller. Not as compact as a similar down jacket but very very close. The workmanship on the jacket is excellent. I'm very happy with my purchase.

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
