Quote from odd man out: “On Everest they use dead bodies instead of cairns to mark the trail. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Boots ” A reminder that there is that thin line between thrilling and crazy, and you do not want to end up on the wrong side of…

Hey that is only 100 miles from my wife's hometown, and not far off the route. So I guess maybe I we will try to swing by some time. College Football HoF used to be in South Bend, IN. Now in downtown Atlanta near Centennial Park. Actually ate at the…

Scott Boras may be a jerk (and the modern day godson of Marvin Miller), but you have to admit he is good to his clients. Had contracts singed this week for $814 million. :S Of course I am sure he takes a nice cut out of that. Owners don't care, they…

I guess for baseball 1 out 2 isn't bad. Ted Simmons well deserving gets into the Hall of Fame. Marvin Miller is the root of most of the things wrong with baseball, but they finally vote him in too.

OK, not really hiking, but mountaineering. There are only 14 mountains in the world with peaks over 8000 m above sea level. In 1986, the legendary mountain climber Reinhold Messner became the first person to climb all of them. It took him 16 years, 3 months, and 19 days to finish. The following year another legendary climber, Jerzy Kukuczka, finished all 8000 peaks, taking just 7 years, 11 months, and 14 days to do it. Since then, only 41 people have accomplished this feat, but none did it faster until in 2013 when Kim Chang-Ho beat Jerzy's record by 39 days (1.33% faster).

That is until this year when Nirmal Purja, former British Gurkha soldier from Nepal, accomplish this feat in an incredible 189 days, beating the old record by 2678 days or by 93.4%! It's not too often you see a record broken by that margin. Along the way he set a number of other climbing records such as hiking from the summit of Everest (#1) to the summit of Lhotse (#4) in just 12 hours. Of course that's "only" a…

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
