Actually, it was yesterday, Saturday, that Kathy and I decided to go for a walk. Here on Long Island the weather was beautiful with a high of 70, no wind, and clear skies. We had some things to get done in the morning but decided to go for a walk in the…

It only happens once every few years. Today we saw a Scarlet Tananger. It was a great sighting too. Not far away. Sat there for a long time in plain view. Male with his full spring plumage, firery red with a hint of orange.

For years now my wife Kathy and I have been using a Rainshadow tent by Tarptent and are very happy with it.
In preparation for this summer's AT section hike I decided to patch the 1 inch cut in the floor.
I ordered a yard of silnylon to make the patches and bought a tube of clear, 100% silicone sealer.
I used 2 tools to apply the patches, a plastic squeegee and a small, hardwood roller.
Instead of working on the floor I decided to bring the area of the tent floor up to work on a small table.
The first step was to cover the table top with waxed paper so nothing would stick to it.
Then I put the floor of the tent on the table so I had easy access to the area with the cut.
I decided to work the inside of the tent first so I cut a circular patch about 6 inches in diameter.
Next I covered one side of the patch with a generous coat of the silicone sealer and put it down centered around the cut I was patching.
Then I used the squeegee to work the excess sealer out. I'd hold the patch in…

"It was the best of times. It was the worst of times."

I had plans. Big plans. My sister who lives in Italy had been bugging me for years to come visit so we could hike the seaside trails connecting the Cinque Terra, or 'Five Lands' for those of you not versed in the Italian language. From the south, the villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare hug the cliffs of the Ligurian Coastline, AKA the Italian Riviera.

This was the year that the stars aligned. I cashed in a boatload of frequent flier miles and made an airbnb reservation in Vernazza for one night. We would take the train from her home town of Siena to Pisa, climb that crazy tilting bell tower, then take another train to La Spezia before transferring to the local train that serves all five villages. Once we were checked into our apartment, we would hike from Vernazza to Corniglia then take the train back to clean up for dinner. The next morning, we would hike from Monterosso back to…

  • Winter Linville Gorge

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
