Long distance hikers, Ötzi from 5000 years ago ate large amounts of sheep fat and other high energy foods to stay alive in cold environments. It is important to understand how to render lard, as once you do it. The fat or fat back will stay shelf stable for a week or two in you pack... but its tasteless. You have to combine it with a protein and other foods. I am working on a Sloppy Joe idea here.

Age, medications, and pounding down the trail over time leads to some issues as you get older, for hikers and non-hikers alike. Allergic reactions, eczema, and psoriasis something I have never had in the past, has creep-ed up on me and clearly attacking me on the feet. The sores open up, itch and bleed on a weekly basis. At first I just suffered with it, and then I borrowed a few topicals from relatives, knowing that there isn’t a cure really irritated me. After a discussion with my doctor we found what works together and yes you need a prescription.
Triamcinolone is a topical steroid. It reduces the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation. Triamcinolone topical is used to treat the inflammation caused by a number of conditions such as allergic reactions, eczema, and psoriasis. Triamcinolone topical may also be used for purposes not listed in the medication guide.

  • Winter Linville Gorge

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
