For me, lunch is usually leftovers. For breakfast it's usually Whole milk plain (NOT Greek) yoghurt with Muesli and pomegranates. My favorite salad is the classic Greek salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, green peppers olives, and feta. For a dressing…

Checked my BP today when I got to the gym, 117/63, heart rate of 59, problem with changing several life style things is that you don't know what helped and what didn't, I lost 12 lbs during the 100 mile wilderness hike ( it's creeping back), I cut back…

Why do Bedouins wear black in the desert?
The question so intrigued four scientists – all non-Bedouins – that they ran an experiment.
"It seems likely," the scientists wrote, "that the present inhabitants of the Sinai, the Bedouins, would have optimised their solutions for desert survival during their long tenure in this desert. Yet one may have doubts on first encountering Bedouins wearing black robes and herding black goats. We have therefore investigated whether black robes help the Bedouins to minimise solar heat loads in a hot desert."
The research team – C Richard Taylor and Virginia Finch of Harvard University and Amiram Shkolnik and Arieh Borut of Tel Aviv University – quickly discovered that, as you might suspect, a black robe does convey more heat inward than a white robe does. But they doubted that this was the whole story.
Taylor, Finch, Shkolnik, and Borut measured the overall heat gain and loss suffered by a brave volunteer. They described the volunteer as "a man…

    Love it or hate it!

This morning I wired money to a closing agent for the purchase of a new (to me) house. Guess they don't want checks any more. My bank immediately notified me thru my "smart" phone that a huge (to me) amount was withdrawn from my account. So now you can watch money fly out of your accounts, almost in real time! I appreciate the knowledge that some computer is watching out for me, but it was truly disconcerting to see my hard earned money just seemingly vanish in some black hole.

I know, it's my own fault. Aside from the hiking/technology debate have any of you asked yourself whether all this convenience is worth it? I think I know the answer to that question.

    I need a drink.

  • Winter Linville Gorge

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
