North from Damascus will put you through Mt Rodgers & Grayson Highlandlands with the wild ponies. Another great streach is Pearisburg northbound. You would hit the VA Tripple Crown; Dragons Tooth, MaCafee Knob & Tinkers Cliff.

Bennington > Killington VT is another great moderate sections with plenty of alpine ponds & views. Also easy & cheap public transport for a section hike.

the only "dry" section from springer to neels is the 6 mile section from hawk mountain shelter to justus creek. fill up at the creek behind the shelter and you'll be fine. if you are hiking now or in the near future all water sources will be…

Omg thank you all for the great suggestions! Sounds like there are several hikes that are truly favorites. I can't wait to sit down and take the time to check into each of these. Any more suggestions I am still open! So excited!

ichiro goes 0-4 in game two; retires. on "opening day" oakland is starting off with 0-2 record while seattle is running away from everyone at 2-0. edit to add: i just looked at the box scores again -- oakland was the home team for both games. this…

while baseball would have you believe opening day is just about a week away on march 28; that is not the case. "opening day" for the seattle mariners and oakland athletics actually started today -- well, actually in the middle of the night (2:30 am on…

The night before my hiking buddies were to arrive, my juniper allergy decided to go into high gear. I didn't want to cancel because I was really looking forward to it and we had been weeks in planning it. So I decided if I felt bad in the morning I'd go along anyway for the first night so that I could shuttle them to the other trail head the following morning.
Slingshot and Craig arrived at my house about 3pm and I told them of my sinus situation and what my plan was. So we headed west in both trucks. Our first destination was Sheetz at Zion Crossroads for sandwiches for dinner. Next on to Crabtree Falls Meadows. The Meadows is just above the top of the falls about 2 miles down a narrow 4 wheel drive road. Apparently a big storm had come thru or possibly a tornado as the road was covered in blow downs. The Forest service had cut a path thru barely 8 ft wide, I mean wtf guys would it have been any harder to cut 10 ft? The pictures I took of the road are void of the blow downs. There…

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
