The Gävle Goat hasn't burned yet. In a tradition going back to 1966, the town of Gävle (YEAH vluh) Sweden builds the world largest Julbock (Christmas goat) in the town square. A Julbock is a traditional Swedish Christmas decoration made of straw (I…

Don't normally pay any attention to the NFL, but when I saw the Dolphins (team of my youth) upset the Patriots, I though it might be worth watching the replay while I was eating. You may just want to speed ahead to the 5:40 mark in the video. Sometimes…

Kathy and I, along with our dog, took a walk on the Nassau/Suffolk Trail this afternoon. We started around 2:30 and hiked out for 2.5 miles, turned around and hiked back. Even though this is a suburban trail we only passed 1 person. We did see quite a…

The weather forecast for the last two days was to be sunny. It wasn't. Each year I got through three phases of weather dissatisfaction. In December, I'm sick of cloudy days so I don't care if it's cold, as long as it's sunny. by March, I'm sick of cold…

Not sure if I should be grateful or suspicious...

My DeLorme inReach for Smartphones died after I received an email notice of a firmware update and installed said update. Garmin bought the inReach line from DeLorme, so I spent time working with Garmin's tech support folks in an attempt to bring it back to life. Nothing worked, so the Garmin rep offered me a 50% discount on any of the new Garmin inReach models. Just got my shiny new Explorer+ yesterday.

So... should I be thrilled that Garmin stood behind a legacy device that they didn't manufacture or should I be angry that they killed my old unit on purpose so I would want to pay for a new unit? ?( I'll go with thrilled. Coulda saved a bunch of grams by choosing the inReach Mini but the Explorer+ has a screen and can be used to send messages by itself or when paired to my phone. Good to have options in case the phone fails.

Goodbye old friend... thanks for the memories and for saving me from hypothermia.

  • Winter Linville Gorge

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
