I forgot to mention, no AC either (except in the dining room), which was a problem the day we arrive when it was 90 deg. However that is rare, it cools off at night, and it got much cooler the next day. They do have a nice retro - style fan in every room.

Day 7 0.2m back to Garfield Trail and then another 4.8m down to trailhead. Slept last night on all the dry clothes I had left other than a pair of socks. After my experience thus far with the Whites especially with Mt Lafayette, decided to move on to…

Day 6 7.6m to Garfield Ridge Shelter. Storm with rain last night but I slept well as the lightning did not wake me. Cooler today, so for the first time I wore long pants and my fleece top, gloves, and bennie. Got off early by 6pm. First problem of…

Kathy sent our son a text yesterday with where she'd been and where she was going. Evidently she had a chance to do some canoeing on some pond. Our dog is pretty good about being in a canoe or row boat .

Before staying in the Galehead and Zealand Falls Huts last week, I really didn't know what to expect. So now that I have some experience, I'll share it here in hopes that it helps someone with their first visit to an AMC Hut. I reserved my bunk space months in advance, so I can't offer any tips for last minute or walk-in reservations.

    The croo

The croo is the crew. Both huts had 5-person croos with one croo member having a day off. Bigger huts have bigger croos. One croo member is responsible for cooking each day. The other croo members may be hanging out, day hiking, or heading to the nearest trailhead to pick up perishable supplies. Yep... that chicken breast you had for dinner was schlepped up the mountain on the back of one of the croo.

    Check In

On any given day, there may only be one croo member in the hut when you arrive. On weekends, the AMC offers members the opportunity to serve as a volunteer at any of their lodging facilities. The volunteer (Mike) I met at…

This past Sunday Kathy left for another one of her solo backpacking trips. Not really solo though as she has our dog, Tora, with her. I'm not sure who enjoys these jaunts more, Kathy or Tora. Before they left all I knew was that they were headed to New York's Catskill mountains, as Kathy couldn't decide which trails she wanted to hike. Later on Sunday I got a text saying that she was at a trailhead on route 206. That's all I expect to hear from her until she gets home this coming weekend. Photos to follow......I hope.

    The Plan

Sox and his family were spending the week at their lake house in New Hampshire, so this section would require little effort from a logistical standpoint. Mrs. Sox agreed to follow Sox and his youngest son Adam to Crawford Notch to leave a vehicle then ferry then south to Franconia Notch for the start of their hike. My logistics were a little more complex. I would drive up from PA on Tuesday August 7th and spend a night with my friend Sue in Vermont before hitting the trailhead early on the morning of the 8th. I reserved a bunk in the Galehead Hut for Thursday the 9th and a bunk in the Zealand Falls Hut for Friday the 10th. Sox and Adam figured they would start a day behind me and catch up sometime on Friday, so they also reserved bunks in the Zealand Falls Hut for Friday but would tent at the Garfield Ridge campsite on Thursday.

Spoiler alert - the plan went to hell. My 91 year old father-in-law came down with an infection on the Sunday before the hike which required…

Whites Day 1: Slackpack over Mt. Moosilauke SOBO. at the recommendation of Bisquick, the caretaker at Hiker's welcome I slackpacked from Kinsman Notch back to the hostel. There was a lot of hype about how hard it was, I just didn't see it. Yes it was steep the first 1.5 miles to beaver Brook Shelter but after that pretty normal trail up, over and down. I carried my pack minus quilt, rainpants, extra food, stove, fuel etc. A climb from 1870 to 4802 and back down to 1056.

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
