uh oh, I'm 69 and expect to do Katadyn this summer. And yes, I do have some aches and pains that don't go away.

Nice. Reminds me of the time I was on Sinking Creek Mtn on the AT in VA. It was early evening, the ridge was narrow and rocky, and I was out of gas. It was several miles to the next shelter and I suspected that once I dropped off the ridge there would be…

Day 4 13.2 miles to Double Gap Lots of different mountain views today. Often you can see the mountains through the trees, but I really appreciate when you have a clear view. Especially when there are some nice rocks you can sit and take a break…

Quote from rhjanes: “I just turned 49....well I just celebrated the 14th anniversary of my 49th.... (I'll save you the math, I turned 63) so yes, things hurt on a regular basis.Judgement, good point and also probably a big part of the issues. It's…

I saw that movie. My wife is a bird watcher. So on our walks, I will turn around to find she had stopped some time ago to watch a bird so I have to double back to find her. This is why our walks cover a half a mile per hour. She says it's some warbler…

  • Winter Linville Gorge

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
