I was surprised to read this in todays Atlanta paper about Black Friday. For some reason I thought common sense would prevail over the desire to save a few bucks. And for the mall to offer a shuttle bus to shoehorn even more people there when the huge…

Posted the thread Interesting new app.

What3Words is not all that new, but I haven't seen it mentioned on any hiking pages. It divides the whole planet into 3x3 meter squares and assigns each a three word phrase. This makes it easy to identify and communicate your exact location. It is being…

When my children were younger I took them at separate times to Black Friday sales, even sitting bundled up outside waiting in camp chairs. But nothing I really need now and not too keen on hanging out in crowds of strangers at this time. So heading out…

Smoking Sox and I have been talking about what hikes we will do after we finish the AT. I see a few options where we could bring the wives and they could stay indoors while we hike.

Besides some beautiful scenery some interesting choices here. And a large variance between coast to coast in Singapore (22 miles) and Canada (over 2 years). Lichtenstein is another country I have visited that wouldn't take long to hike across. :)

What3Words is not all that new, but I haven't seen it mentioned on any hiking pages. It divides the whole planet into 3x3 meter squares and assigns each a three word phrase. This makes it easy to identify and communicate your exact location. It is being used by SAR, for example. The words are assigned by a mathematical algorithm so they don't mean anything. For example,

My last Where Am I Now post was at wept.compacts.watery

The AT goes from turntable.heist.fishery to relevance.hobby.fluid

But long.green.tunnel is in Greenwood IN

And hike.approach.trail is in Shangdong China

    long.section.hike is also in China.

I hope that in this bizarre and crazy year of 2020 that each of you have things to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving holiday. Me, I'm thankful that none in our extended family has had the corona virus or lost their job. The closest we came was my wife being unemployed for 3.5 months. She's now back driving a school bus.

Astro just posted about hiking in his ancestral homeland (Scotland). Curiously, I have been doing the same, reading about hiking in Padjelanta and Sarek National Parks in NW Sweden part of a remote, scenic, and rugged area north of the arctic circle. Padjelanta NP is a high arctic plateau with many lakes, hills and mountains and is a summer home of the Sami - indigenous semi-nomadic reindeer herders. Access is provided by a network of well marked and maintained trails that are serviced by huts with beds, stoves, kitchens, saunas, and shops offering resupply options (including fish and reindeer sausage). You can also hike off trail and camp anywhere you want. Adjacent Sarek NP, in contrast, is complete wilderness (no trails, huts, or people), with steep glaciated mountains separated by deep valleys. I found a Swedish hiking forum which thanks to Google Translate has been a great source of info. Someone there posted this photo of where the two parks meet at Alkjarve. Remarkably, next to…

  • Winter Linville Gorge

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
  • Great Smoky Mountain National Park

On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
