I've had several of them. They are good. I bought some for "2" people. my buddy and I took them on a multi-day canoe trip. Every meal for 2, we had trouble finishing them!
Anybody tried them? I thought they sounded good and bought five to try. If they are really a full single serving as advertised, then they're a pretty good deal if they taste ok. $5.95 to 6.95ea.appalachiantrailcafe.net/index…4b5209a725b5e3897b40d1270

I went to college at Valparaiso University which is just down the road from the Dunes. At the end of our Freshman Orientation Week, the school sponsored a trip to the beach for the whole freshman class. The buses dropped us off an we were told the beach…

Yosemite's Firefall is back. In years when there is enough flow over Horsetail Falls over El Capitan, and the Sunday is at the right angle (10 minutes before sunset in late Feb), and if the skies are clear, the waterfall glows as if on fire. This year in order to manage the crowds, people must park at the Yosemite Falls parking lot and hike one mile through deep snow (with no guarantee conditions will be just right).
This is not to be confused with the fake Firefall where they pushed a bonfire off Glacier Point for the entertainment of the crowds below. This was done every week for almost 100 years before being discontinued in 1968.
i don't normally watch youtube thru hiking videos unless there is something unique or different about the attempt (and there have been very few of those).
anyway, i learned about the this guy from my georgia hiking facebook page. this individual is going to thru hike the PCT as his goal is to lose 200 pounds (he's close to 400 pounds at the beginning of the series).
i've only watched the first video so far and about all i can say is he has a great attitude. i know that he only covered 7.3 miles in first 4 days, and several times people have had to give him water. i hope this is a life changing experience for him.
As of yesterday, the US has added a new National Park to the NP system, bringing the total up to 61. The spending bill signed yesterday included a provision to change Indiana Dunes from a National Lakeshore to a National Park. Not sure if there is funding for a better sign. I guess Indiana was feeling left out in the NP department so their legislators lobbied for this change. Frankly, the other three National Lakeshores are much better than ID. I wonder if MI and WI will also lobby for this "upgrade". MI already has IRNP, but that is only "sort of" in MI. WI has none so AINL could be next. At only 15,000 acres, IDNP it is one of the smallest NPs so there won't be many hiking opportunities. With a few new NPs coming on line in the last few years, I thought I should do another accounting of how many I've been to. For me I've been to Badlands, Bryce, Everglades*, Glacier, Glacier Bay, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Great Smokey Mountains, Haleakala, Indiana Dunes*, Isle Royale, Joshua Tree*,…

On February 27th, 28th and 29th I did a two night out and back trip from Wolf Pit Road trail-head to Table Rock mountain and back. In typical cafe fashion I planned this trip while driving 80 mph east on I-40 heading back from the Smokies. I stopped at a McDonald's to borrow some free Wifi to get a picture of a the trails and away I went. Going up Wolf Pit road in my 2002 Honda Accord was risky with the amount of ice and snow on the road. The final hill going down to the…
On February 25th and 26th I did a nice loop in the Smokies from Big Creek Ranger Station parking lot to Deep Gap along the AT south of Mt. Cammerer fire tower. There was about 6 to 8 inches of snow while going up. I stealth camped due to the amount of snow coming in and the next day went down the Big Creek trail. Overnight there was another 6 to 8 inches of snow and freezing fog.
